A SPIRITUAL NIGHTMARE

A single-player, third person horror action-adventure game set on a remote island spiritual retreat. A peaceful weekend soon turns to dread after a group chant opens The Gloom, a psychedelic dimension of terror that feeds off negative energy. Interact with a recurring cast of characters, untangle the complex history of the island, and witness terrifying revelations about the cosmos. Only you can fight off the creatures, reason with the survivors, and unravel the legacy of a cult from the 1970s to reverse the ritual.

EXPLORE AN ISLAND FILLED WITH COSMIC DREAD

Interact with the other members of the retreat as they slowly become consumed by their own negative energy. Survive against an array of prismatic creatures and cultists released from The Gloom as you piece together the weird history of the island.

Mixed bag

I really, really wanted to like The Chant more than I did. For myself, I do feel like 3 stars is a bit too low but 4 stars is really overselling what's here. I think the storyline and settng is actually kind of novel. I don't think it's really something I've seen in many other games. Maybe I would say it's a bit like Silent Hill meets The Descent by way of Annihilation - though that description probably gives it way too much credit. At its core, The Chant is a melee-focused survival horror game and the plot seems to largely serve that more than anything. And while the combat is its focus, I don't know if it feels that great to play. It does feel clumsy and awkward like many survival horror games - which is something that you probably want in a survival horror game. That being said, there's a fair number of options when it comes to the combat. You have many more tools at hand than you might expect for a game like this. You've got 3 melee weapons, 3 throwables and 6 different powers - opposed to Silent Hill's progression of slightly stronger pipes and handguns. Most of them serve different purposes and switching weapons on the fly is relatively easy. Additionally, there's an upgrade system that feels kind of superfluous. But overall, I feel like the core of what the story wants to be about - facing your grief - really gets lost in all of the monster fights. It ramps up quite quickly and doesn't seem to resolve itself particularly well. That being said, I did largely enjoy my time with The Chant and it's nice to be able to choose whether you want to fight or run & hide. Also, it's not really particuarly scary so if you're looking to get into the genre, with multiple difficulties, this probably wouldn't be a bad place to start.

Nic Cage movie but without Nic

What I mean is that it has the vibe of the recent horror movies with retrosynth soundtrack and funky colours like Mandy or Color out of space. That's good, because it allows for weird and kinda fresh story/monster content. And this game has that. It has weird stuff and weird monsters, extradimensional plants/bugs/jellyfish in this case and odd fleshy growth. It switches between normal world and funky world kinda like Silent Hill. And it's a game like that, like Silent Hill or Resident Evil. Not particularly elaborate, you mostly just go to a different part of the island to pick something up and/or fight something while you pick up some background info on the cult and the game doesn't throw any particularly complicated tale at you. What's different between games like Resident evil etc. and this is mainly the combat and I wasn't feeling it. It's kinda clunky, you need to dodge but it works weird sometimes, and the worst thing is the weapons. You don't have weapons, you have to craft some esoteric items you use as melee weapons but they're limited use and you have to craft them over and over. What happens if you run out of items? Well, you don't have any default weapon. Your only option is one of the attack "spells" which consumes spirit energy, or shove move that's used to push enemies out of the way (in the intro, you don't need to push anyone after that) and that does only minimal damage. Which is pretty frustrating on high difficulty. You get an achievement for the highest difficulty, but it's a pain and IMHO not worth it. The game is way harder, you can die easily, your limited use weapons run out faster etc. and you're constantly lacking crafting items or healing items. Play on easy if you want to just enjoy a funky horror movie, I mean game. The performance of the game was kinda weird, it's Unreal 4 but somehow it squeezes the hardware to the max without looking any better than any other Unreal 4 game. Anyway, the game's alright, especially at 80% off.

Quite Good Indie Survival Horror Game

A quite good, solid AA single-player horror action-adventure with psychedelic vibes and a supernatural atmosphere. This game features a thrilling plot, a unique spirituality-based health system, well-acted characters, a strong soundtrack, varied enemies, and impressive visuals for its budget, all running smoothly without performance issues. The action may feel somewhat rough at the beginning, but it improves as you progress. Additionally, minor adjustments to the sound bitrate may be necessary, and note that dialogue choices do not impact the overall story. Overall, it’s a compelling experience that I rate a 4 out of 5 stars, or a 7.5 out of 10.

Simply good!

Good narrative game with simple but neat mechanics that doesn't overstate its welcome by taking you 70 hours to complete! The combat can be a little clunky but I'd explain it saying your character is not a natural born fighter :D Thanks devs, please make more!
