Great game on its own

I have never played Bard's Tale, so I saw this title and decided to give it a shot. I have honestly had a hard time putting it down. It definitely has a lot of the 80's CRPG tropes built in, but has updated the UI and some gameplay mechanics, all of which will be able to be turned off on a later release for a more authentic experience if that's what you're looking for. If you're someone like me who enjoys dungeon crawlers but hasn't played this series, I would definitely recommend it. It can get grindy here and there, but that can be overcome with some good old fashioned dungeon exploring. I eagerly await the later releases throughout the rest of the year and hope they deliver a similar experience.

A perfect remaster of a classic series

I just completed the first game once again, 23 years after I finished the original. I was just going to play a single dungeon for old times sake, but the game is just as good as it was then so I played it all the way to the end once more. I'll likely play the other two games as well when they come out (this contains all three games but only the first is playable right now, other ones are being finished). This is a perfect remaster. Nothing has been changed, only life is dramatically easier now with the addition of an automapper and various improvements like asking temples or the magic shop to simply heal or recharge everything, magic spells sorted by type and fulltext search. Every week they seem to add another yet improvement. It is what it is, a dungeon crawler, but a really good one, and I'd forgotten how much I enjoyed getting lost in the dark in a dungeon with a battered party while running out of spell points, desperately searching for an exit. For three games in one, this is a fair price.

For fans

Almost everything has been written here, and there is nothing more to add. Nice graphics, many useful updates (the auto map is the best), you can finally use a mouse OR keyboard shortcuts, group inventory management, auto/quick/normal save functions... This is a blast. I'm currently playing part 3, and gog galaxy says I'm playing about 80 hours now. That means the game is easier than back in the days. On my CPC464 I wasted 80 hours alone for the first three dungeons. Oh thank you auto map, I love you!!

Awesome remake, flawless automapping

Fantastic remake of the trilogy I played as a kid. Good graphics but not over the top, so it retains that simple nostalgic feel. The remake does not hold your hand. It does make the tedious work automatic and much easier, but that is grunt work you could & would have done anyway on graph paper. It doesn't ease the difficulty of the games insofar as puzzles. Also, experience points required to up levels are reduced, but again this amounts to tedious grunt work you know you could & would have done back in the day simply by fighting longer and "wasting" hours. They really nailed the automapping bit with a great legend of all the hot spots. Really wish Krome & InXile you would negotiate the rights to Dragon Wars, since that was originally to be and even named "Bard's Tale IV" until just before its release! Anyway, on to the official Bard's Tale IV! Thank you, Krome and InXile! Keep up the great work!

Classic old school RPG brought back

Man I remember this game from when I was a kid on commodore 64 and amiga... An old school unfgorgiving RPG. I spent hours and hours mapping on graph paper each level and the city painfully lol. This lacks flashy graphics (although in the day these weren't bad lol) but is an unforgiving dugeon crawler (more so in legacy mode). For those who have played the original the reboot it is a refresh on the graphics and has a bunch of features we all wished at times we had in the original (auto mapping, on screen journal with map, saving outside the adventurers guild, etc.)... It is very well done. If you have memories of this game the reboot will not dissapoint. If you have never played this game before it is a classic game from an older time. It's a grind and a challenge. Try it on legacy mode and see where these games originated from
