Live through an epic role-playing Viking saga where your strategic choices directly affect your personal journey. Make allies as you travel with your caravan across this stunning yet harsh landscape. Carefully choose those who will help fight a new threat that jeopardizes an entire civilization. Every decision you make in travel, conversation and combat has a meaningful effect on the outcome as your story unfolds. Not everyone will survive, but they will be remembered.
An epic Viking saga brought to life in 2D glory – beautifully hand drawn combat sequences and animations, accompanied by an evocative score from Grammy-nominated composer Austin Wintory, will immerse you into a fantasy realm inspired by Norse mythology.
Over 25 playable characters from 2 different races, human and varl, the horned giants – embark on your epic journey with a variety of characters from 7 different classes, each with unique abilities and upgrade options to fit your play style.
Strategic combat with consequences - victory or defeat and even the permanent loss of a character depends on which characters you choose to take into battle and what decisions you make afterwards.
The journey is as important as battle – your role in building and managing your caravan as you travel the vast frozen landscape is critical to not only your own survival but the survival of an entire civilization.

Why buy on GOG.COM?
DRM FREE. No activation or online connection required to play.
The game is great, I am not going to talk about it, people already made it better than I can.
However, I start to play in french because I had trouble understanding the texts in english. Usually I play in the original language but for once I was making to many bad choices because of this. And there we are: the french translation is A SHAME.
There're numerous mistakes everywhere, the style is completely lost. Producer probably wanted to save pennies and gave us that shit. Will probably not buy the second game just because of this.
The biggest problem i have with this game, is that it doesn't realy want to be a game. You can fail all over the place and still finish it because the game just wants to tell a story.
In theory, you have to manage a caravan with soldiers, varls(fantasy creatures) and alot of civilists.
Supplies are scarce in the world of Banner Saga and you need a big, well fed army to defeat the dredd that are pillaging villages and cities. Humans and especially varls are on the edge of extinction in this game and your army could make the difference in this world.
So you have to make harsh choices and sometimes leave people you come across die because you can't feed another mouth.
Oh, and leveling up your heroes and buying new supplies takes up the same resource, so thats another harsh descision you have to make.
Well, that's the idea. But this game, even on the highest difficulty, won't allow you to fail. You can litteraly starve all your people to death. It won't have any effect on the story.
Failing in combat is also no problem. The game will continue no matter what.
I ruined this game for myself when i heard about this because the story is realy good as far as i can tell. (The Banner Saga has a wide open end)
But when the gameplay part is absolutely senseless it ruins the experience as a whole and even the depressingly feeling that you had when your caravan reaches the last supply is suddenly gone.
Because it does not matter anyway.
TBS is a huge missed opportunity.
...but it just does not 'click' with me. Actually, of all the games I backed on Kickstarter, this one has disappointed me the most (so far). I admit it is still an ok game and there are many worse out there, but here is why I do not recommend it:
- It is story based, but the story is not great - mostly it seemed pretty boring, to be honest.
- Lore and world bckground are probably interesting, but the game presents them extermely scarcely, mostly on the world map, which you have no gameplay reason to ever use at all.
- There are a lot of characters, who seem interesting at first, but never really fulfill their potential and end up being bland to annoying. My guess is that voice acting would help a lot here.
- There is tactical combat, but rather simple and repetitive - and battles seem more like solving a puzzle than being in command of a party of unique warriors. There is little enemy variety too.
- Caravan management layer is completely broken. Losing all clansemen makes no impact on the game, it does not even change random events, which still refer to your caravan as if it was full or people.
- No manual save option means you might end up forced to repeat certain parts after coming back, if you happened to play through a longer section not containing autosave points.
- CYOA dialogue options are rarely clear as to what they will cause, meaning you might choose an option and end up causing something you were actually trying to avoid. Usually you are just forced to choose randomly, as there is not enough information.
On the plus side, presentation in superb. The game looks and sounds great (music is especially impressive), but this should be dressing for a good core game, not its main advantage.
My rating: $3
You get an old version (2.18.08) as until today 21. August 2016. The patch 2.18.11 was released on 12. April 2016 if you look at steam ...
You can't mod the game, as the mod files are a DLC on steam. No luck in modding, the editor (which is ironicaly shipped with the gog release) depends upon the uncompiled source asset files.
So, just don't buy it on GOG! You will waste your money as the developer ("stoic") doesn't care about their GOG customers and GOG doesn't care to provide an good experience to their customers by holding their contract partners responsible for updates and broken features which are solvable.
I've only played a few hours, about 3 fights in or so, but I don't think I'll be playing anymore, mainly because the combat system is very frustrating and has problems that existed within games of this genre for many years now. The story so far was kind of ok, the art is more memorable than it is beautifull, but I really don't want to deal with the problems the combat gives me to find out what happens next.
Most of the problems for me are in the combat. Some of them are objective I suppose, but most of them are just things I am annoyed with. The differing unit sizes, the small size of maps, the really really bad UI that keeps hiding information from me, tooltips that don't apply to every icon leaving me guessing what this or that thing does, abilities that don't tell me how much actual damage I'll be doing, enemies being blocked by allies means you can't see the full potential of an enemy's movement range, not being able to see an enemie's/ or allies attack range without telling them to attack first, meaning you can't see that stuff before you chose to move, movement being a separate action means there's even more confusion. All of these things lead to death of allies and general frustration. Wether it's my fault or not, I'm just not going to deal with it. Many of these problems exist in the Fire Emblem and Heroes of Might and Magic series, and some of them were even solved, many years ago.
The music story and art as well as enemy diversity wasn't too great, but perhaps I just didn't get to see them as I quit about 1-2 hours into the game.
