Bad game, faithful to the character
This game captures Sherlock Holmes' character to the letter; his coldness, drug addictions, and so on, if you have read the novels you will recognize him. As a game, however, the puzzles are just incredibly hard and lack instructions, with little help from the game to know what you are supposed to do; thankfully you can skip most (all?) of them, after a certain (unknown) number of tries. Just keep fiddling around and resetting the puzzles for two or three minutes and a button to skip them will appear. If the previous sentence didn't give it away, the story is great and captivating (despite some minor flaws) but the actual game is a tiny bit of evidence gathering, a lot of puzzle-requisites gathering and then skipping the actual puzzle because they just can't be solved by normal people. It seems this one, unlike others, has no included walkthrough; with a walkthrough it might be passable but I've had enough of this game. Another Holmes game that "requires" a walkthrough is Secret of the Silver Earring; I actually loved that one, despite sharing many flaws with this one, because of all the Holmes games I've played it's the only one where you actually feel like a detective solving a crime. Another thing: in this game Watson is really useless, both as a game and plot device, outside of cut-scenes all he can say is "What now Holmes?". I played several hours of the game and enjoyed the story despite the puzzles, but in the end I uninstalled it unfinished, it boycotts itself too much. Good story, good production values, technically better than previous games, ruined by an obsession with insane and force-fed puzzles.
