Tesla Effect: A Tex Murphy Adventure

This was one of those games I bought like 2 years ago, give it a try and thought "yeah, these adventure games are not my bag now" despite it being by far my favourite genre in the 90s. 2 weeks ago I decided to boot it up again as I was sick of of buying this generations tripe, most of it was the same, lacking quality story, acting, and general ambience. First off I played through Police Quest 3, one of my favourite adventures of all time, which I also recommend. Then I got into this. After 1 hour I was hooked! I like the characters in this and find none of them annoying as they were all acted pretty well. The locations were interesting and the story good which means it is better than 90% of current generation games. I didn't find the puzzles that irritating but if I did the awesome hint system helped me out everytime. I will say try not to use it too often otherwise you will not gain the satisfaction of solving it yourself, which is a great feeling. This is the best game I've played for a while, I find modern games are far to big and I never finish them as I get bored even towards the end, the latest Assassins Creed I'm looking at you. Linear games like this are a breath of fresh air. Here's a good/bad points section: + Interface + Acting(b movie material which suits the game) + Ambience + Hint system + Story + Locations - Some puzzles are stupid, not many but a common problem with this genre - Some items you need to solve a puzzle are in a stupid place - Hard to see an item you need on the ground(use your torch, but sometimes it doesn't work) Overall a triump, I really hope they'll do a follow up, it's a great series and now my favourite genre again. Buy it if you are an adventure fan, I found it relaxing to play which is very rare in modern games. Well done Tex, another case solved!

Having played the original Tex Murphy games, I had pretty high hopes for this one to be a solid follow up. It exceeded all of my expectations. Even the opening credits scene blew me away... the music, writing, and performance of Chris Jones as Tex in that opening cutscene got me hyped to get into the game like few others have. Getting into the gameplay itself, it was pretty amazing to see some classic locales from earlier Tex games rendered in modern graphics that are pretty great. Considering the low budget and crowdfunding that went into making this, I find this game to be highly polished. The in game atmosphere and music really give it an amazing ambience I haven't seen in a detective game since LA Noire a few years back. The puzzles are well done, the acting is on point, and the story is really well executed. Perhaps even compared to previous Tex games, I felt the "mystery" aspect was really well done and motivated me to keep playing to find out what would happen next. This game also does a great job of making you feel emotionally invested in the characters and outcome. With Chris Jones having aged alongside the character he plays, it gives it such an authentic feel as we catch up with Tex decades after his last appearance. That, coupled with the very personal nature of the story, meant that I was with Tex every step of the way. Like earlier games in the series, we also get multiple endings, but in this one also a dash of moral choices and even some alternate romance options. If you ever loved the earlier Tex games, you owe it to yourself to pick this gem up. For those new to the series but who enjoy detective games or point and click adventure series, you will be right at home here. For all others, if you are new to this genre, this is a wonderfully accessible yet also challenging starting point. I simply can't say enough good about this game.

I just finished a full play-through of all the Tex Murphy games and Tesla Effect really deserves its place in this great franchise. If you liked the previous Tex Murphy games, you can buy this one without hesitation. The puzzles are a little bit easier than the ones in the previous games but it did not really bother me since it allowed to focus on the characters and the story. On the technical side, I want to point out the fact that I did not had to face any bug which is a nice plus these days. So, good P.I. never dies and, hopefully, will come back in another episode (fingers crossed).

There may never be another game like this one. There are no other games quite like this at the moment - the only thing you may find similar are the older Tex Murphy games (my introduction was Under A Killing Moon though fans tend to rate Pandora Directive highest). The Tex murphy games involve the main character, a private detective, working his way through a number of cases by hunting for clues and puzzle-solving (in the computer genrated environments of New San Francisco) and interviewing characters in delightful live-action interactive dialogues that are often very amusing. The games are punctuated with many movie sequences (with high production values rivalling some TV shows or feature films) that add to the drama or humour and move the story along. Finding clues and using objects involves a 'point and click' method with a menu, much like so many 'adventure' games. The greatest appeal of the Tex Murphy games is the clever and frequent dry humour, the 'film noir' and detective fiction themes, added 'Blade Runner-ish' distopian elements, the sight-seeing of exploring the well-drawn environments and the general and unique 'interactive movie' experience that few other games offer. Tesla Effect brings all of this back but in impressive high-definition (HD) video, with an incredible soundtrack, an entertaining cast, multiple story paths and alternative endings (as with Pandora Directive) in a new tale that features one of my favourite characters from history - Nikola Tesla. It was almost everything I wanted and an incredible title in a 2014 full of unremarkable games. It remains a gem and I hope will grow in its reputation and stature, like a Shawshank Redemption of the gaming world! Playing it, you will be forgiven for thinking it cost many millions of dollars and took a team of hundreds. It was actually a modest Kickstarter project!
