Never gets old

As an old-fashioned man who vastly prefers older games, I'm going to admit that Terraria never gets old for me. I'm VERY careful with the games I choose to play because of how some of the, "world" has geared. Anyway, this is definitely a survival craft game but not like another Minecraft clone. I really can't call this a Minecraft clone because of the major differences between Terraria and Minecraft. It's a 2D side and vertical scrolling survival craft that doesn't feel empty and has a ton of creatures to fight off. There is also a huge amount of items to find and craft including equipment. The sword is not the only type of weapon in the game, so there's a lot to choose from for your personal tastes. There's all sorts of materials to build your base/house with too from dirt to rainclouds, leaves to metal. It's all about what you prefer which is the #1 thing I love about this game. Different NPCs will move into your homestead depending on how many rooms with the appropriate accommodations you have built and you can choose who can live with you too. Last, there is a whole lot to do and you'll always have goals you'll want to accomplish. All and all, Terraria is worth every penny of it's price.

Extraordinary game progression

I found the game a little bit difficult to get into at first. You're just kind of dropped into a fairly complex world with very little instruction - and it just takes a bit of time to work out what you can do, and work out what you should be trying to do. The first time I played it, I got bored after about 20 mins, and left the game unplayed for several months. But, when I tried it a second time, I got past that initial uncertainty, and worked out how to play - and the game quickly when from being dull to being extremely fun and interesting. It is a vast game, with a huge amount of possibilities to freely explore and create with. But it also has some the finest game progression I've seen in any game. As you make progress through the game, new content seamlessly becomes available to you; and the gameplay evolves. Terraria is a huge game, that can take hundreds of hundreds to 'complete' - but it stays fresh because of how much the gameplay changes and evolves as you progress through the game. Many of the challenges in the early game start to be become irrelevant as you progress; making way for new challenges that weren't there before. And there is a constant and continuous process of exploration and experimentation in the world. The game has a lot of long-term value; but it is also great casual multiplayer.

More than a thousand hours well spent.

Bought this ages ago, back when it was still on version 1.0.3. Liked it quite a bit. It wasn't all that polished just yet, but there was definitely some fun to be had there. Fast forward a little bit, and 1.0.6 hits. I start playing again. Buff potions become a thing, the Guide NPC suddenly has the ability to tell you what to craft items you own into, there are tons of new decorative items and the game's mechanics get a good polishing. Good stuff! Fast forward a bit again. We're now at 1.1. This shiny new thing called "Hard Mode" has been added, and it's kinda funky. What was the end game before is now not even halfway through the progression, and defeating a certain special boss unleashes tons of new things onto your world. Huh, they've done it again. A while later again, 1.2 hits. It's awesome. More than a thousand (!) new items, a hundred new mobs and a whole bunch of refinements to make the move into Hard Mode less jarring and more fun. Wow, these people are serious about keeping their game kicking. Now, the year is 2015. I'm browsing through the games on this brand spanking new GOG Galaxy service thingymajig, and I see Terraria in the list. Having just completed another 50+ hour multiplayer run of the game with a few friends, I figured I'd leave a review. Folks; this game is awesome. The devs have kept this thing going for a good few years now, and continue to add new things. If you're looking for a game with somewhat Minecraft-y building/mining elements, gratuitous amounts of spelunking and collecting and/or a lot of great 2D combat (a bit reminiscent of something like Castlevania or Metroid), definitely give this one a go. One note: This game does not currently (as of 1.2.4.1) seem to work all that well with resolutions above 1920x1080/1200. There are mods out there to scale it higher, but running the unmodded game on my 1440p display (windowed) forces it into a stretchy (and seemingly unchangeable) 1920x1200 resolution that doesn't look all that good.

Excellent, beyond excellent game, but...

Let me start off by saying that I have close to 1000 hours in this game, it is by a gigantic margin my favorite game of all time. However, if you intend to play multiplayer, this game only has peer to peer multiplayer in which you have to port forward and connect to specific IPs to play with your friends. On steam, you can simply join your friends and have your friends join you as the developers created a tool on steam for easily playing with multiplayer. If you plan on playing multiplayer at all, I recommend the steam version for its ease of use. However, this version is DRM free and if you would rather that route with its harder multiplayer, more power to you.
