The taming of the Red Planet has begun!

Corporations are competing to transform Mars into a habitable planet by spending vast resources and using innovative technology to raise temperature, create a breathable atmosphere, and make oceans of water. As terraforming progresses, more and more people will immigrate from Earth to live on the Red Planet.
In Terraforming Mars, you control a corporation with a certain profile. Play project cards, build up production, place your cities and green areas on the map, and race for milestones and awards!

Will your corporation lead the way into humanity’s new era?

GAMEPLAY

Achieve a high Terraform Rating, by increasing the temperature and oxygen level or creating oceans... Make the planet habitable for future generations!

Get Victory Points by building cities, infrastructure and other ambitious projects.

But watch out! Rival corporations will try to slow you down... That's a nice forest you planted there... It'd be a shame if an asteroid crashed right on it.

MAIN FEATURES

The official adaptation of the cult board game, faithfully developed with the help of Jacob Fryxelius, author of the boardgame.

Turn-based strategy: choose a specialized corporation, build facilities, research innovative technologies and manage your resources productions

Life on Mars? Improve the conditions on the Red Planet by warming it up to melt the ice and create oceans, planting oxygen-producing flora and introducing both small and big animals.

Corporation rivalry: it’s a nice forest you’ve planted there - wouldn’t it be a shame if a large asteroid was steered to crash right on it? Develop Projects that will slow down your opponents!

Mars for all: play solo or with up to 5 players in multiplayer games against local or online opponents, humans or AI.

Game variant: Try the Corporate Era rules, for a more complex game. This variant adds new cards, including 2 new corporations, and focuses on economy and technology. These are projects that do not contribute directly to terraforming, but make the corporations stronger, adding new strategic choices to the game!

Solo Challenge: Finish terraforming Mars before the end of generation 14. Try new rules and features in the most challenging solo mode on the (Red) planet.

Draft variant now available: Add a new level of strategy and depth by choosing your best cards and blocking your opponents. During the Research Phase, start by drawing 4 cards, choose one and pass the others to the next player. Continue to choose a card and pass the rest on until all cards drawn have been drafted. Which card will you choose? Will you block your opponent from getting a card, or choose one that fits your strategy best?

Great Game, Frustrating Digital Adoption

I have never played the physical board game. I seem to really like the game dynamics and have enjoyed playing this with friends remotely during the pandemic. However, the conversion from physical board game to digital experience seems subpar. I'd give the game itself ~4/5 but the digital adopted version ~2/5. Issues: At the beginning of gameplay your corporation and inventory does not show up on your game mat until after you select your cards, instead showing blanks and "CORP NAME" placeholders. This makes selecting your starting cards difficult as you can't view how many credits you have and your corporation's abilities. The interface is glitchy and stutters at time (Ex: you are not able to view your own cards all the time - sometimes they simply disappear and you can not view them until your turn. This makes planning moves much more difficult and slows game flow). You don't see your opponents' movements as they play them, but instead there are large pauses while nothing happens on screen if it is not your turn. Then in a moment, the game quickly rolls through the entire that turns actions in a matter of seconds (and the animations/on screen displays are hard to quickly follow what is happening). Would be much better if things were happening live/as the person plays them instead of pause/blitz pause/blitz. Hoping they update the digital version to be more of a fun smooth digital experience.

Interesting but clumsy

Basically it's Dominions or Colonists of Catan in a Mars colonization format. Choose cards, collect resources, optimize your strategy while occasionally hindering the opponent. Personal frustration, the turn process is slow like a turd rolling uphill. After your opponent passes, you still have to take turns despite being alone. Then you have to wait ten seconds for the actions menu to load in, because it doesn't register that your turn has started. THEN you have to repeat this 3 more times because you can only take two actions per turn. It quickly gets old and massively inflates the duration of nearly finished rounds.

Less than the sum of it's parts, sadly.

The board game is great and the game mechanics are great. But the execution of the computer game is less so. I have been screwed over many a game by the game not correctly tallying tags. That means that you often cannot unlock/use cards due to not meeting the tag-prerequisite - despite having more of the specific tags than needed. And the game is sufficiently hard as it is, so it's really unnecessary to punish the player unfairly. It's still a good game but I wouldn't recommend paying full price seeing how it doesn't feel like a finished product.

Unfreeze the Mars!

It's my favorite board game of all time, so I enjoyed digital version, notes, animations, management and other are all designed to have a great time. But every second game is frozen with some lags or bags, so players can't play cards. It's very frustrating, especially when 5 people each play for 30+ minutes and game just starting to crush player by player. I found going into main menu and then resuming sometimes help, but even if you lose at least 1 player like that — the game is ruined, all result, achievements and fun is vaporized. Please, search for the reason of this issue, it will be very important for players, and then I will write a good review with another rate then 2/5.

Runs flawlessly on Linux via Wine

Terraforming Mars is a board game I always was interested in but didn't have tho opportunity to play yet. Therefore I cannot really judge how faithful this digital recreation is to the original. I can however say that version 1.2096 runs perfectly on Linux, using Wine 6.0. I cannot confirm reports of stuttering or glitchy animations or opponents turns not getting displayed other reviewers experienced on Windows. Everything plays smooth as butter. The interface could give a little more information upfront I'd say but other than that there is not much I would criticize. Hot-Seat Multiplayer is supported out of the box, online-play requires a third party account.
