Even if it feels incomplete, Tempest 4000 is still worth playing. The visuals remain entrancing, the music is as powerful today as when it was released, and the task of clearing baddies from webs continues to be challenging. If you can look past the roughest levels, you'll find this to be a fun and highly memorable game. Here's hoping Llamasoft gives it a little post-release polish so it can become a modern classic, just like Tempest 2000.

Intro plays, game won't start

I get the 'select screen size' window, then the animated Atari logo splash screen, then the 'Atari presents' splash screen, then a crash to the desktop. Windows 7 Professional 64-bit (6.1, Build 7601) Service Pack 1 Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU E8400 @ 3.00GHz (2 CPUs), ~3.0GHz 4096MB RAM DirectX 11 NVIDIA GeForce 210 2GB video ram I'm guessing I don't have enough video ram but unfortunately no hardware specs are listed on the store page and also the game discussion link doesn't work. Oh well it was only 99 cents.

Fun gameplay that is true to its heritage

I have been playing Tempest since my first exposure to Tempest 2000 on the Atari Jaguar which I still play to this day. This game honors the game play from Tempest 2000 while also not being an exact clone of it. Without digging into the various differences and changes I can say that this is an arcade style game with a great sound track that gets very intense but keeps you coming back for more. I can lose myself in this game for hours because the game play is simple to learn and the difficulty continues to ramp up, keeping you engaged. The visuals are very nice. It has the vector graphic aesthetic and call backs to the "particle effects" of the Jaguar Tempest 2000 while also introducing blur effects and other modern graphic effects. The soundtrack is very nice and fits the game play. What you'll hear is music from the original Tempest 2000 with new sound effects but it works very well. They kept that soundtrack for a very good reason. Llamasoft did a very nice job with this version of Tempest and I'm enjoying the hell out of it.
