After two decades, Nightdive Studios is rebooting and re-imagining the original System Shock. We will keep the new game true to the classic experience, keeping all the things you loved while giving today's gamers the modern look and feel expected from a AAA title.
With the help of members of the original team, including the original Voice Actor of SHODAN, Terri Brosius, Citadel Station has never been more immersive or terrifying!
You're a renowned hacker, the most notorious cyberspace thief in the corporate world. Caught during a risky break-in, you become indentured to a greedy TriOptimum executive. After six months in a healing coma, you awaken to the twisted aftermath of a terrible disaster. Where are the surgeons? Why is the station in such disrepair? Slowly, the chilling realization that something is very wrong creeps over you. Once a prime corporate research facility, Citadel Station now teems with mindless cyborgs, robots and terribly mutated beings, all programmed to serve SHODAN, a ruthless A.I. There's scarcely time to think before it unleashes the first terror...
I barely remember playing the original, as I consider the second game a better experience
that said I like this demo, runs smoothly on my machine with max settings, I love the blend of modern graphics with old textures (you have to get really close to noticeand it reminds me of modern retro shooters, specifically of WRATH) it's very atmospheric and the gunplay is not bad nor impressive, but I assume the game willl be more focused on the resourses managemment
I only got a bug with my demo where I was slowly strafing left without pressing anything, I had to close the game and unplug my gamepad to fix it (my gamepad works fine on every other game btw)
No crashes (for now) I died after a while but I think I'll jump back in to see if I can get further
I can't remember exactly when I last played a demo of anything but I do appreciate the chance given here.
I haven't played the original but this demo shows a lot of promise. I really liked the atmosphere and the graphical design. Even though some elements are somewhat clunky such as the UI or the melee combat, I feel it added to the experience.
A save feature would have been nice since I explored for around 45 minutes and then the game crashed on me. Still, it's an alpha build, so it's understandable.
I'm looking forward to the final release!
The ONLY reason I give this demo 4 stars instead of 5 is that I did experience some crashes. This may either be my personal problem or an actual issue that hopefully is fixed for the release. Just something to keep in mind.
Other than that, I hadn't played the original System Shock before trying this demo. I went back and gave it a try and I have to say it's quite faithful to the original, while also really modernized but with a retro feeling at the same time. What I mean by all that is, that it just feels right. I would be really interested to hear what the developers behind the original game think about this remaster.
This game has come out of left field for me and I don't think I've ever been so plesently suprised in a while. The graphics are a gorgeous mix of an early 90's pixelated look and modern graphics and I cannot understate how well that translates. Melee combat is weak and the music isn't anything memorable, but I feel like I can overlook that with how the puzzles and layout of the level are. Very engaging and is a world just begging to be explored thoroughly. Nightdive deserves more recognition for the amazing work they've done just on this demo.
This is a really solid remake. There's some excellent voice talent and sound in general, and the redesigns largely capture the original's essence. From what I can tell, the new visuals like Saturn passing by the station are great. It's so competently made though that I feel the need to nitpick what isn't so great.
Firstly, I'm running this on a toaster. Not expecting the performance to be good with this fossil of a PC, so that's fine- not a fault of the remake. That said, the demo drops you into the thick of things without a chance to tweak settings on your own. That, and apparently the intro cutscences aren't pre-rendered? They're extremely choppy for me, so I unfortunately couldn't stand to see how things had changed in that regard. I'd like to see that changed so I could get the whole experience the first time loading it up. Seems like a performance hit that could be spared, though it probably won't affect any systems that meet recommended specs.
Some things have animations now that really slow the pace down. I think the surgery pods make sense to be a bit slow, but the softs really do seem to take their sweet time to get useful thanks to the new animation that plays each time. Speeding up this animation would seem to help the controls feel more responsive- fighting them probably isn't worth carrying over to the remake.
Overall, though, the remake is looking very good. The Nightdive team are clearly aware of what made the original great and how they can freshen things up just enough. The atmosphere and dark humor are still intact, and the gameplay hasn't been compromised in favor of convenience. Also nice to see that someone left at least a few unopened soda cans.
Looking forward to the full release!
