Almost as perfect as SHODAN!

This is how you remaster a classic with love and care. Make it a little prettier, smooth out a few wrinkles, but in a way that you keep the vibe, the atmosphere, the charm (even the jank) and basically everything that made the classic a classic back in the day. Respect it, and give a little shine to it, where it needs. As someone who beats the original in every 1-2 years (sometimes more than once a year) I can only give it the highest praise. Not perfect, but nothing is perfect - expect our godess SHODAN, of course - but it is damn close.

Classic, finally upgraded

System Shock 2 has always been great, with tense atmosphere, stealth, combat and rewarding character progression and exploration. This new version improves stability, reduses jitter, and supports high resolition with proper UI scaling and high frame rates, which is exactly what I expected. Combat hasn't been tweaked at least in a major way, which is fine by me; System Shock 2 is a dungeon crawler more than an FPS. While beauty is subjective, I welcome improved graphics, especially in higher resolutions. The original version is too high defintion to have low-poly charm, and too low definiton to really shine. While mods and fan patches can get you far with the previous release, this is going to be my preferred version from now on.

A good remaster

If you liked the original, you should absolutely consider this version. The price might seem a bit high at first, but if you’re a true fan, it’s worth every cent. The game now supports OpenAL, which adds a subtle echo effect that really improves immersion and atmosphere. Textures and meshes, including weapons, have been upgraded tastefully without changing the soul of the original. Facial animations are now included, and the UI has been slightly reworked to feel more polished while staying true to the classic style. Every single drawing seems to have been recreated as vector art, which makes them look much sharper and cleaner. The cutscenes have been fully re-rendered in HD using proper methods, not cheap AI upscaling. There’s also a bonus section filled with behind-the-scenes content, interviews, original sketches, and more. Mod support is still available, and the coding has been improved for modern systems. It runs very well on Linux through Proton. In short, this is the version that long-time fans of System Shock 2 have been waiting for. It respects the original while making it feel fresh again.
