“Remember, the meek shall inherit nothing.” - The Book of Cataclysm
Congratulations on becoming our newest EuroCorp Executive! You now hold the distinctive honor of being one of the few who will determine the shape of our Company. Your EX-ALFA3 clearance allows you to use the Marionette Remote Drone Operation Suite. Your squad of Agents will follow every order without fail or question, and you are free to eliminate or destroy any targets as you see fit. This will serve you well as those zealots of the Church of the New Epoch think they can compete against our Company. Your mission is to remove them completely. To that end, we have transferred 50,000 EuroCorp credits to your account. Failure to use your funds wisely or to eliminate the competition will require you to auto-euthanize. We feel confident that your skills and integrity will ensure that this state of affairs will never arise.
Sincerely,
The EuroCorp Board of Directors
Welcome to an urban hell of ultra-violent mayhem. Welcome to Syndicate Wars where you’ll take control of a squad of cybernetically enhanced Agents and wreak havoc on the enemy. Funnel money towards research that will allow you to upgrade your team and make them into more efficient killing machines. Use the environment to assassinate, destroy, and eliminate your targets all from a classic isometric perspective. If you need cannon fodder, why not set your Agents loose armed with Persuadertrons to control huge crowds, or even enemy agents, and get them to do the dirty work for you? So whether you’re keeping EuroCorp in the black or burning infidels for the New Epoch, Syndicate Wars will have you giddily carving a path to victory. Welcome to the merciless future of violent squad-based real-time tactics!
Synidcate Wars belongs to a franchise known for a specific style and approach that is undoubtedly polarizing. Without going into great detail I can say that I find this game's control scheme to be stiff and often unresponsive. Even when I get my character moving along at a good clip and gunning down enemies, I feel the experience is wanting. It's simply not enjoyable, in my opinion.
On the plus side, the dated graphics and sound design still create an effective atmosphere that makes you *want* to play the game and immerse yourself in its world. Too bad it plays so badly. If you've already successfully played through another game in the series then Syndicate Wars might be a better experience for you.
I loved this game back in the day and played it obsessively, completing both campaigns several times each and spending countless hours demolishing every building I possibly could, literally nothing of this game was left unexplored by me and my buddies. I even hung onto the CD ROM through the years I never even bothered with owning a PC.
The dark brooding cyberpunk atmosphere of the game was heavily influenced by Blade Runner and the likes of Ghost In The Shell (Gee I wonder what'll give that away..) .
The setting of an oppressive omnipotent electronic control and surveillance state versus religious fanaticism is eerily prophetic now.
Syndicate Wars is a game very well thought out altogether and while it may seem dated now the freedom to steal cars, board public transport, the total free will to accomplish your described missions through however you felt it was best done (set an ambush, brainwash and arm bunch of squishy civilian types etc.) was a huge breath of fresh air from the predominate RTS flavour of the time.
On the RTS note there is also a (admittedly thin, but powerful influence on your team's advancement) resource management side such as in-field "persuading" scientists and cyborg recruits to join your team as well as the acquisition of advanced tech and funds which I will leave up to your own discovery and deviousness!
One downer to all of this however is the lack of higher resolution function working correctly, and believe me, the visuals of this game are burnt into my brain like no other so for me personally this is a big point to note, if you haven't played it perhaps you might not notice so much I guess but believe me it can look better than it does, if only cause it gives you a more zoomed out view than you can currently access.
ATTENTION GOG: Will pay double the price for again for the graphics fix!!!
All things said and done you will have a great time with this game, ambient tunes, cool atmosphere make for a cool and relaxing little timefiller!
what a great game this is i had the pleasure of owning this game for the ps1 and one of the best games for the ps1 in my opinion i got this game a few months ago and i can say that its so much better than the ps1 version if you dont have this game then get it its a great game and deserves to be part of anyones collection
This is a really REALLY good sequel to the classic strategy game Syndicate.
It is set some time after the first game and the corporation you created has successfully taken over the world and inserted mind control chips in almost every single civilian out there.
But soon things start to go very wrong, some sort of virus cripples the EuroCorp chips and now there are people known as Unguided running around on the streets and shooting up everyone they see.
There's also the small problem of the Church of the New Epoch, a very fanatically religious group that also want to rule the world and intends to wipe EuroCorp out.
You are free to pick your sides and they each offer a different take on the various cybernetic modifications you will be making to your agents.
And there's certainly no shortage of weapons of mass destruction here either, you even get nuclear grenades that can completely and utterly demolish a building.
Are you prepared to step in the dystopian future that is Syndicate Wars?
Where to start? Man this was just an amazing game back in the "day". That new release via EA in this generation was lacking what this game still has. The graphics have not aged well, but the core game play is still there and rocking solid.
