Includes Syndicate and the American Revolt expansion.
In the dark and twisted cities of tomorrow, corporate syndicates compete for global dominance. But the boardroom deals and corporate takeovers of the future look very different from today: they are lead by marketing directors who manage teams of half-men, half-machine cyborgs with no conscience and plenty of guns.
You are an ambitious marketing director in the Syndicate, hand-picked to lead a team of cyborg mercenaries. You work in the problem-solving department and you are damn good at "taking care" of problems. Some might say that violence is not the answer but you know better. There here are hardly any problems that you can't solve with a well-placed bullet. Collateral damage in the local population and infrastructure during the “negotiations” is, as always, acceptable. After all, what would you expect form the dystopian futuristic world run by mega-corporations?
Syndicate is Bullfrog’s masterpiece of a game in which you aren’t saving the world or protecting innocents. You just make sure that your employers get what they want. At your disposal are four cyborg agents, an impressive arsenal of weapons and gadgets, and a massive selection of cybernetic upgrades. You are free to unleash this power on a highly interactive map where you can blow up buildings, steal cars, light trees on fire, or just shoot stuff. Produced by Peter Molyneux himself, Syndicate is the essence of cyberpunk and, with its great music, stylized visuals, and mind-blowing atmosphere, it has earned its place among the best games of all time. Make sure to check out the game that secured Bullfrog's place in game development hall of fame.
Great game for its time, some game bugs still exist (when too many people crowd a train and some get "stuck on the tracks")...
One DOSBox bug still exists: CTRL-D does NOT work... SCODE.com (Google for it) shows CTRL-D is being picked up with the same settings, but the software never does.
My recommended settings: 2xsai, DO NOT keep aspect ratio, fullscreen mode, overlay...
For me too many bug.
Audio doesn't works and in a mission two crashes.
I used to play this game on my amiga 500. It's still fascinating but on w10 doesn't works really good
In Syndicate, you control a team of operatives in a near future society assigned to complete a variety of missions. From the looks of it, Syndicate was ahead of its time in terms of ambition but somewhat constrained by the technology of the time. In my view, the game belongs more in a museum than on my hard drive, and I cannot recommend playing it in 2024 and beyond.
Gameplay:
Prior to missions, you assemble and equip your team from a roster of operatives. This is not unlike something we would later see in the first Ghost Recon game. The missions take place in real-time. Given the clunky interface, I might have been more inclined to play Syndicate, if the missions were turn-based, such as X-COM.
Characters/Customization:
The operatives have a name, some skills, and equipment, and that's about it.
Story/Atmosphere:
Probably the best part about my experience with Syndicate Plus was the opening cutscene which in spite of technical limitations managed to establish the mood and atmosphere using pixelated graphics.
Graphics/Sound:
Technically, graphics, sound, gameplay, etc. this version of Syndicate released in 1996 seems pretty rough and badly outdated. If the game were remastered (or better yet, remade) and modernized, I would take a second look... and I believe there are newer versions of the franchise out there, even in my backlog.
Replay Value: I played less than 30 minutes, frustrated by the interface and unwilling to go out of my way to learn the proper mechanics for leading my squad on missions.
Overall Score: 4/10. I will give some brownie points to Syndicate for how it inspired many games that came after it.
Attempted to play in 2023-2024.
I loved this game way back when it came out. It was a lot of fun to shoot the cops or make them work for you to get the job done. One of the best time me and my brother loved was to get a lot of people to clump up and flame them and laugh as they all screamed and run around till they dropped dead.
A MUST buy for anyone (old players or ones new to the game)
I still have fond memories of playing this back in the 90's, despite the fact I didn't know a lick of english.
The music is well done and sets the mood and the enviroments you send your cybernetically enhanced agent are varied and allow for some tactical planning when it comes to certain challenging missions.
Do you have what it takes to be a ruthless director set on killing off the other syndicates of the world and assume total world domination?
