Never heard of Syberia before, I got Syberia 1 and 2 free from GOG. After the first 30 minutes I was wondering is this from 2017 or 2004 because the walking animation was smoother in the first games and some old people having young voices plus bad lipsync takes away from the immersion... but I got used to the animation and the voice thing is not happening often so I enjoyed the game a lot. At first I also thought the camera angles are odd as othes say but I got to like it after a while cause it feels different than regular 3rd person games. I like these kind of games of exploration, puzzles and story they are relaxing, I also like The Longest Journey series.
but alas, no.
I have not finished the game, but I feel I have enough insight to give a proper reveiw on its lackluster polish.
the story is good, the characters(some of them) are likeable. but the camera controls are in the toilet. often times, you spend too much time wondeirng around town finding "cutscene" triggers. I hate event-triggered games. and dthe "oh I almost forgot" syndrome is retarded. as in you spend waisted effort running or wondering around to find the "mayor" desides to acost you about sometihng to trigger a movie or a lead. this, and the game has no real challenge. no leads, and if you are good or bad at playing these games it matters not, pure luck is responsibel for "tripping" over these "easter eggs" to "event openings" the puzzles are semilogical or totally stupid. most have little to nothing to do with the nature of the story and certainly not representing Syberia's trilogy at all. for instance you play med nurse to "steinburg" when he had "heart failure" Dammit jim, I'm a reporter, not a pharmisist! what puzzles do relate in a steampunkj fashion are dumed down cog wheel assemblies. for instance finding the damned thigns hidden often wonky camera angels put up more of a "challenge" that meaning the makers of this game MADE the controls difficult to "make it more challenging" when really it just makes it stupid. instead of makking it thought provoking they made a mess and it is more a cat/mouse camera chase and mouse cursor poke than a point and click. speaking of this, mouse cursors often disappear unwnatedly when trying to back out of a puzzle. fortunately this game has one(and only one) redeaming quality the original voice actor of Kate Walke. instaed of hiring a cheap immature silly girl the used the original actor, Sharon Mann, a mature sounding woman with the voice of a songbird, as I awlays remembered in Siberia 1 &2. the others aren't too bad, for example, Mike Pollock is an excellent actor as Captain Obothough.
After playing through the first two games, which I have playe before and remembered liking, i decided to try to play the third one. It was a mistake, there are a lot of problems with it that were non-existant in the previous games. The first thing that I noticed is that the game doesn't allow you to manually save AND it doesn't allow you to skip the cutscenes, and a small bug in the first room of the game, where you can't load your game, makes the menu look like the load button is selected, while it's actually the options button that is selected; moving the cursor down focuses on "exit to main menu" option and I accidentally selected this option two times, the game didn't even ask if I want to return to the menu, and didn't auto save after the first custscene, so I had to watch it three times, since you can't skip them.
The plot, right from the start, doesn't make any sense too, referencing some "snow ostriches", and things that had no place in the first game (since I just played them, I think I'd remember). I can't judge the rest of the plot, but it seems like other reviewers experienced more of that.
When talking to the characters, I also noticed that the dialogue system was replaced with a "wheel", very limited at that, and the voice acting.. it didn't suit the characters I saw at all. The animations are also very strange, as if moving too fast, even when you're not running. The controls are terrible, obviously made for controllers (with all the "moving stuff around with the pointer" in the puzzles), yet moving the character with the controller feels terrible and unresponsive. I couldn't bear the game past the first few rooms, and probably won't be playing more of it, judging from what I saw in this first ~hour.
This isn't the same game as the first two at all, don't buy it hoping for an even remotely similiar experience.
The bugs/ glitches are all over the place to the point that makes the game impossible to play. Such a shame to make it available to the public like this, this is worse than a beta test.
I finished the game just now. I finished playing the first two games a few years ago, hoping that this game was the same as those. It was a little disappointing, though I can see room for improvement and I enjoyed myself.
The controls are one of the things that frustrated me the most, it's not often that I complain about something like this in an adventure game, it feels like the game was made for consoles. Clicking on your destination sometimes work and sometimes don't. A few times I even had problems with the camera as it wouldn't move like it should. So I needed to load the game from an old save file to continue. Luckily it saves automatically, so it wasn't that far but still. I'd rather prefer the static images of the first two games. Beautiful areas as well. This is something than can use a lot of improvement.
Then the second part the voice acting. As many already told, the voice acting doesn't add up. An old man with a young man's voice. That doesn't add up. found it even more disappointing that the lines of text don't match up with the subtitles. Sometimes a word is missing, or even a whole chunk of dialog. Also especially in the beginning I noticed that the mouth's of the NPC's didn't match with the text. But to end with a positive term, I'm glad they got the original voice actor for Kate Walker again. Oscar's voice actor has been replaced, at first it was a bit getting used to, but in the end I liked him.
The graphics are nice for the game, I think that's the reason they went for the 3d. At one point in the game there was a bit of problem with lightning, but it looked good.
Then the story. It continues the story of Kate Walker helping the Youkols again. It was good, though I wished they show more of how Kate is dealing with the situation. The music is very good too.
If I have to summarize, if you're a fan of the first two, you need to play this game. The story will help you go through it with the music. I hope the next part will be even better.
