Description
Regarded by many wargamers as THE best fantasy wargame ever made, SSI’s Sword of Aragon is the first 4X game and a true precursor of later classics such as Conquered Kingdoms or SSI’s own Fantasy General.

Set in the Aragonian Empire, you are heir to the late Duke of Aladda, and your task is to once again extend Aladda's dominion and eventually crown yourself king in Tetrada. Executing your father's will properly means raising and equipping an army, then venturing forth to do battle against the dastardly foes threatening Aladda and its surroundings.

Your success in Sword of Aragon depends on careful allocation of precious resources, astute military planning, and deft combat maneuvers. Knights, priests, warriors, mages, rangers, cavalry, infantry, and bowmen are some of the units you can recruit, and in true AD&D fashion, you can equip them with different armor types. Nothing in the game will strike anyone today as a big deal, but back in 1989 it was a revolutionary title that attracted many non-wargamers to the genre.

Excellent AI and addictive gameplay help Sword of Aragon remain one of the most playable and replayable fantasy wargames ever. Two thumbs up!

I want to see this game expanded!

One of the finest features of this game is that each soldier occupies a certain amount of space in a unit. You can get more goblins into a unit than humans, more infantry than cavalry. And units can occupy the same place on the battle map, if they do not exceed the amount of space the place can hold. Thus cavalries can ride through your other units, if the other unit isn't too big. Or you can have spearmen and archers occupying the same place, which obviously is handy. Also you can equip each unit and name them as you wish. And so much heroes which you can also name and equip! You really can use the terrain to your advantage too. Placing your troops on open terrain while attacking a city can lead to a defeat if the defender has a lot of missile units. Developing your cities also matter, a lot. Each city is different, some are good in agriculture, some have good trading location, some are surrounded by forests - but be careful, neighboring elves may get upset if you cut down forests too much! And yeah, there are dragons, too! So much fond memories. I wish someone would make a new version of this, with bigger map.

One of a kind

I'd been wishing for years that GoG would get this title and here it is. There is nothing else like this game. As long as you can take very old graphics, nothing else catched the feeling of freedom and adventure--like tabletop--in a fantasy world. It plays on a strategic level, but you have characters and even pick all the equipment for each unit. Complex interactions tell a story that is differnt each time you play the game and you'll always be discovering a new mechanic. Where do those raiders come from (the answer is never they're just random)? What if I attack while their army is busy making trouble elsewhere? What might be up in those trackless mountains? etc.

Sword of Aragon

It´s a nice strategy and RPG game. It has plenty of details without overwhelm. The sound could use some extra efects and, possibly, better instructions.

Sword of Aragon

This game is a lot of fun despite the crude 1980s engine. The combat system is well designed, and you can customize your units. For example, even basic infantry can specialize in defense, melee attack, ranged attack, or a mix of the three depending on what armor and weapons you give them.

One of the most interesting takes on the fantasy strategy genre. Sadly never really caught on, but now cou can give it a try ;)
