This is a very good game, but this is not the best version to get. The steam version is significantly less crash prone than the GOG version. I don't know why. There were multiple issues I had with the game locking up and crashing. and the same save files worked flawlessly in the steam version. I don't know why. It speaks to how compelling the game is that I bought it twice to finish playing it but I did so with great frustration and again, this is not the best version to get.
Disclaimer: This review is about the current Mac version 2.06.
Short version:
"Suzerain" is a very enjoyable game - as long as it works.
Unfortunately, I've encountered a game-breaking bug which renders the game unplayable.
Long version:
I rarely play new games and usually stick to the classics, the good old games.
However, when I heard about "Suzerain", I was immediately excited and - after some deliberation - couldn't resist buying it (I even created a new GOG account for it, although I've been very critical of GOG since the "Devotion" debacle).
I then played "Suzerain" extensively in version 1.x - at that point I would've probably given the game at least 4 stars.
Then I put it aside for the time being.
Last year I heard there were some new features, so I completely reinstalled Suzerain in version 2.06.
Again, the game was a lot of fun (easily a 4+ stars experience) - until the moment a fatal bug made it impossible to continue playing.
The bug occurs relatively late in the game: As soon as I sign the "Minority Rights Act", the map freezes - I can still interact with the interface, but it's no longer possible to continue playing.
And no, I have not made any changes to the game files (i.e. the save files).
I immediately reported the bug to Torpor Games - the answer was: nothing.
I then waited in the hope that the bug was known and being worked on.
But even after months of waiting, there was no new patch (and of course no response from Torpor Games).
So I contacted them again - and this time I even got an answer, albeit not a satisfactory one.
Unfortunately, I can't recommend buying "Suzerain" at this point, at least not the current Mac version 2.06 (maybe the Windows version is not affected by the bug).
I originally wanted to buy the DLC "Kingdom of Rizia" as well, but after experiencing first-hand how poor Torpor's customer service is - both in terms of communication and bug fixing - I'm going to steer clear of their products for now.
Text-heavy and very slow to feel as though you are even part of this world, never mind having an effect on it. Although I really liked the opening moments and sense of possibilities at the start these quickly faded into distant choices that never resonated in to the main game.
Not for me.
