Some comments on "Below and Beyond"

I installed the game on "hotfix #3". Installation was done one Debian Bullseye. No problems. :-) The dlc brings brings a new resource type "exotic metal" gained by asteroid mining. Landing on asteroids is nice and feels "real". To get exotic metal: a. collect with a rover resources on the surface ( 0 - 10 exotic metal) b. automatic extractor (will NOT mine exotic metal). c. manned extractor (can mine exotic metals) There is no check on the lander payload. Forget to take fuel with you or to bring drones along => you are stuck. Select to bring colonists with the lander, the game will select adult and seniors. And the seniors which will not work. :-( For a manned extractor you need a water extractor, tanks, pipes, power, a dome and a electrolyzer. The drones will unload happily the resources as the first step all resources from the lander. In the meantime all colonists will die because they lack oxygen. The same may happen on take off. The drones will happily clean up everything on an asteroid which you will never visit again and the colonists will die in the meantime. A manned extractor is build at a normal metal and a exotic metal deposit. The extractor will mine normal metal without the possibility to switch. :-( A dome does need water and oxygen. You run out of water, you have to leave. And even deep water deposit were used up in 3 sols (bug ?). The only reliable way to collect exotic metal is with a rover. :-( Every expedition => 0 - 10 exotic metals. Many buildings in the below do require exotic metal. Underground dome 40 exotic metals, the bottomless 150 exotic metals. 150 exotic metals ~ 300 asteroid expeditions.. Discovering the underground is fun. But why should a player build something below? The game mechanic does not include a reason e.g. to build a dome below when you can build a dome much easier on the surface. Conclusion: The ideas of the dlc are quite interesting. But it does not enhance the game mechanics with incentives to use them.

buggy, unergonomic and annoying

Instead of beeing fun to play, this DLC is hell of annoying. Learn from my mistake and sty away from it. - very frequent popup messages about trivial events interrupt delicate positioning of objects or other activities that one is currently focusing on - underground floor, despite and sometimes only after being cleared, gets rovers stuck in one travel direction. Sometimes this happens towards both ends of a passage, so they get unrecoverable - rubble sometimes needs up to 10 attempts of clearing before it is removed (or 10 instances of rubble are placed exactly the same) - In the Jumbo Cave there is rubble placed behind the cave walls, indicated only when a dozer is selected by the changing mouse pointer while pointing at the respective wall. - Jumbo Cave Reinforcements can not be build as drones drive to the resource stack place, but instead of creating the resource stack they wait a few secs and then return the resource to the storage. - The sheer amount of rubble one has to dig through makes underground exploration a hellish gind instead of a fun after-work entertainment. When will game designers understand that we are looking for relaxation from a job and not for a 2nd job?

Sadly I cannot recommend

Below and Beyond does bring a lot of new content to the game. There is now and underground tunnelsystem to explore, including a few quests, as well as sending rockets to drill out the occasional meteor. The meteor mechanic is to send a specially designed rocket to mine a new mineral of asteriod. The rocket flight, and mining must take place within a timeframe that varies from meteor to meteor. I found no bugs in the mechanics but ther eare some arbitrary restrictions, such as solar cells being the only allowed power producing building, that might have been implemented as a balance feature, but does not make much sense within the setting of the game. The undergrund tunnels, is a dark network that requires sending roveres to clear out and explore. The darkness is a bit wonky and sometimes rubble blocking a tunnel can only be removed from one side. You need the minerals from asteroids in order to build underground (for some arbitrary reason), and the underground suffers from the occasional tunnel collapse unless you build stabilizing pillars. Rubble, just like waste from toxic rain, will only be cleared automaticly if a rover or drones is already within range. There is no way to automate long distance cleaning. At the end of the day I was left asking *why*? The meteors adds special minerals at the cost of more micromanaging, and the minerals are only useful undergorund, where even more micromanaging is added. And all we get out of it, is more rubble. There is no sense of accomplishment or no joy in finally automating a big chain like in vanilla. It's just more hassle, with no noteworthy benefit. Also once meteors/underground have been started, there will be periodic events that cannot be disabled and quickly becomes annoying. (A new meteor or undergorund earthquake you say? 400 and counting!) I cannot recommend this. Note: I adopted the expansion late, and I was not overwhelmed by the bugs other review mention. I had no gamebreaking experiences.

Too Seriously Bugged to Play

If you switch between above to below ground stuff get built underground instead even in not possible otherwise. This makes the underground content largely unusable and the DLC therefore stinks.

I would rather disable it

This is DLC that is trying to add new challenges to gameplay but is so buggy and unbalanced that I would rather disable it in my next colonization project.
