Description
The year is 2010 and the Major Powers of the world as we currently know them have disintegrated into bickering economic and military regions. The United Nations has disappeared, and in its place an organization with far sharper teeth referred to simply as "The World Market" has taken its place. Individual Regions are left to fight for power to dominate their neighbors, their countries, their continents, and then the world.

Supreme Ruler 2010 represents the next generation of strategy game. Not another build and attack 'click fest', but a challenging simulation of political and military leadership. You control the agenda of your region as you maintain its economy, grow the support of your population, and strive to influence your neighbors. Through skilled management your influence and popularity will grow... Will you be a successful diplomat, who can increase your power through an incredibly flexible diplomacy model, or will you be a ruthless and ambitious ruler that lets your tanks and missiles speak for you?
  • Resource realism - resource management has moved beyond the "chop trees / mine gold" simplicity. You have the ability to control the manufacturing, consumption, and export of 11 key commodities.
  • Real-time or turn-based modes for different play styles.
  • Hundreds of detailed and accurate military units to control ranging from battalions to entire divisions.
  • A revolutionary campaign system with over 40 scenarios and over 200 possible starting regions from virtually anywhere in the world.

Huge Learning Curve for a Mediocre Game

For all intents and purposes the game has no useful tutorial. I'd recommend looking over the first 3 or 4 tutorials (you don't actually do anything in them, just read text) and then starting a single player scenario and just trying things. Once you have some idea of what is going on, the game is interesting in some ways, but its not a fast game. Even at the highest speed, a day takes about 30 seconds to pass, and most things take upwards of 20-30 days to do. Given the scale of the game that leads to a long time to do anything. There is a lot of strategic scope to the game, setting long term goals and trying to achieve them is sort of interesting. Unfortunately, the game bogs down with a very clunky UI, and much of the information you need isn't really obvious or intuitive. I haven't had much luck with diplomacy in the scenario's I've messed with, the AI seems to have a single reply to proposals which boils down to "ok, i'll make that deal if you throw in XXX amount of money." It doesn't seem overly smart either, as one of the nearby nations i was trying to improve my relations with was completely out of coal, so i GAVE them some, and they counter-offered saying they would accept the deal if i threw in a few hundred million along with the free coal. Combat is, well, not very good. You have the option to take full control of all the units, but then you have to have them retreat manually which is difficult to see when they need to pull back, or you can have an adviser help with orders, and he/she will throw units off in random directions ignoring any plan you might have made. I'll admit i didn't mess with combat much yet as the times i have its just frustrating. As usual for games, the AI seems to have a massive advantage in the ability to multitask that makes up for its limited imagination. I can't really suggest that you purchase the game unless its on a nice cheap sale, maybe 99 cents would be about right.

Does not meet expectations

If you are interested in this series at all, go for the 2020 version instead of this one, as that fixes some of the major problems in the first installment. Steer clear of 2010, it is a sure-fire disappointment.

Not so good as expected

Game isn't worth buying. The game is very complex, which is good but the tutorial totally sucks. The tutorial does not explain anything, in fact makes it even more chaotic rather then explain how the game works. Interface of the game is well bad. Everything is so small.

Only one great thing about this game...

The intro Battlegate music. Back in the day, I bought this boxed version in the store and used their message board, asking about why some things worked the way they did. Their response: The fun of the game is figuring things out. That would good, if it made any sense. I also asked about the AI will get gnarly with me, and was told it was because I was the only person trying to become Supreme Ruler. Are you kidding me??! The AI starts wars all over, but if I start one, many nations hated me.

Protest Review

How come the average rating is three stars, when the two ratings that are up have two stars?!
