Description

Super Meat Boy 3D is a tough as nails platformer where you play as an animated cube of meat who's trying to save his girlfriend (who happens to be made of bandages) from an evil fetus in a jar wearing a tux – IN 3D

Our meaty hero will leap from walls, over seas of buzz saws, through crumbling caves and pools of old trash sacrificing his own well-being to save his damsel in distress – IN 3D!

Super Meat Boy 3D brings the old school difficulty of classic retro titles we all know and love and streamlines them down to the essential no bull straight forward twitch reflex platforming. Ramping up in difficulty from hard to soul crushing Meat Boy will brave lush (but also on fire) forests, vast dumps filled with the waste of mankind, and high-tech forges producing the very traps that will inevitably kill Meat Boy over and over and over - IN 3D!

And if a bunch of levels weren't enough, we also have epic boss fights and tons of unlockable secrets – IN 3D!

  • Tough-as-nails precision platforming action
  • Brutal, but fair levels designed to break you.
  • Boss. Fights.
  • Dark World levels so tough, you'll scream in the rain at a bus stop.
  • A soundtrack that was once described by a Guitar Center employee as “hey, either buy the guitars or get out. We’re seriously going to call the cops!”
  • 3D!

Needs a little more time on the pan

And with minimal fanfare, it's here: the sequel that 2010's Super Meat Boy deserved. If you've played the original, you'll know what to expect: a ridiculous run speed, blood splattering everywhere, slippery walls jump, dodging buzz saws and grinders in fiendish configurations that would make Sigourney Weaver from Galaxy Quest lose her cool, all to rescue bandage girl from the evil, and unnecessarily d**kish, Dr Fetus. It's camp, it's crude, it's simple, it's hard, and it's pure fun for all fans of masochistic platforming. Except now, it's in 3D. The translation of SMB to 3D is shockingly well done. Controlling Meat Boy feels just like it did in 2010. Team Meat decided (wisely, IMHO) to build the levels around the 8 cardinal and ordinal directions. Every wall faces one of these directions, making the game very playable with a keyboard, and giving the 3D platforming a welcome level of precision. I also appreciate that the A+ times and the dark world are back, as well as the fact that secret bandages can now be found in every level. There are also unlockable characters which, from my limited experience so far, seem to not be simple reskins of Meat Boy. The game has all the ingredients necessary to be great. The only issue is that (much like the original SMB) the initial build seems undercooked (version 0.3). The framerate on my RX 9070XT left a lot to be desired, and there are certain visual bugs that took me out of the experience. Full disclosure: I am running it on Linux under Wine, but, bafflingly, the pre-release demo had none of these issues. For that reason, I imagine it will be fixed in the coming weeks, and once it is, I may decide to increase my score to the coveted 5 stars.

Easy recommendation!

Bringing Meat Boy into 3D is really great! If you're into 3D platformers, this is your game. Comparing it to the 2D game however: It has its advantages and disadvantages. For me personally I like the switch into 3D. I still like the 2D game though. They're entirely different games. In 3D, it feels like you can cheese the levels way more than the devs have intended to. I like this! It makes solving the levels way more open and creative. If you can't beat the A+ time, maybe try another path and try to cheese your way to the finish! One disadvantage of 3D is though: Jumps feel much more inaccurate. I mean, you'll get used to it and there's a guide below the character that helps you aim the jumps but sometimes it feels like guesswork if I positioned Meat Boy correctly. There are sometimes small spots on a wall that you have to hit. Judging the correct height to land on the wall correctly is sometimes really difficult! There's only a guide right below the figure to give you a guide for left / right and front / back. But there's no guide for up / down (if that makes sense. Sorry, trying to explain it as best as I can). Still, it's an easy recommendation for every Meat Boy fan and for people who are into challenging but fair 3D platformers!

Great transition from 2D to 3D

Really fun platforming levels that provide a fair amount of challenge. My only complaint is that getting an A+ rank is solely determined by completion time, but they've also included a hidden bandage in each level that requires some wasted time to collect. Thus, I ended up having to beat most of the levels twice (once for the bandage and once for the A+ rank) which is a little tedius.

SUPER MEAT BOY'S BACK

This feels exactly like the original game, just in 3D. I love it.
