Subverse

Disclaimer: I backed this on KS and so I own it already on Steam. What is Subverse? It is a sci-fi porn game which combines a kinetic novel with an Asteroids-like SHMUP and a simplistic TB grid combat. Let's quickly talk about the PROS first: - the VA work is stellar and helps bring the characters to life - p good looking sex scenes; not the best I've seen, but still good - nice music The MEHS: - the SHMUP is probably the most developed out of the two combat sections, but it needs more variety in mission design; right now it's the same map with the same floating asteroids all over again; the enemy variety does help in alleviating the monotony somewhat - the TB combat needs a lot of work; currently the maps are very cramped (8X8 I believe); the unit ballance is out of whack, with range units ruling supreme and melee units (even tanks) going down in ~2 rounds And the CONS: - the writing is just awful overall; it constanly crams in every d!ck joke imaginable in an effort of trying to be funny but it just comes off as cringe, though I admit I did chuckle a few times; the pacing is also bad with long winded dialogue sections that seem to go nowhere - but the gravest sin that Subverse makes is that it disconnects the sex scenes from the rest of the game; you buy them from a separate screen and then string them together in a slideshow player; most are ~10 s long gifs, however a few are longer and also include a "happy end"; the problem is that none have any context whatsoever and so all of the possible eroticism is lost; the porn is the reason everyone bought this and yet it is BY FAR the biggest let down; they say the next update will address the issue so I guess we'll have to wait and see... This game is still currently in development so some things are still bound to change, however I fear that the overall design paradigm is unlikely to suffer significant alterations. I would not recommend paying 25 euro at this point in time. Wait for more updates to come out.

Original backer here. I knew what to expect with regards to the SHMUP and grid combat gameplay and honestly, those expectations were met. The gameplay is decent, the music is amazing and the dialogue can be quite witty and nerdy if you're into that sort of humour...but that's not really what everyone came (hah) here for, is it? As far as the actual sex scenes are concerned, it's shocking how basic they are. The adult "portion" of the game is literally just a gallery of 5-10 second loops which are almost completely detached from the actual game and story. You can unlock them in whatever order you like, whenever you like, with no context attached to any of them. There are literally dozens of free flash games (and even RPG Maker games) from 10+ years ago that do a better job overall with the hentai, even if they don't feature fancy 3D graphics from the Unreal engine. As a whole, I understand that Subverse is still in early access, but unless some relatively major changes are made to the existing structure and flow of the story/game, I don't see how the devs can salvage literally the most important aspect of their game. I sure hope I'll be proven wrong and be able to recommend this game in the future.

I own this game on Steam but might as well say the same thing here as I did there. This is game is still early access and quite early at that. They do at least one patch a month with a bigger one every 3 months or so. Currently I enjoy the story and dialogue. The dialogue is crass, to put it mildly, but still has a bit of wit to it which I enjoy and can't wait for them to expand upon it in future. I enjoy the space combat but that's because I love bullet hell shooters and while this isn't particularly difficult, there is still enjoyment to be had. I do not enjoy the ground combat as it's a very basic X-Com style system and I don't like that at the best of times. The sex scenes are animated and voiced well but ATM they are just repeatable, non-interactable GIFs. They have big plans for this, such as making them a bit more customizable and interactable but who knows when that will come to pass. In short, if you are interested in the premise it might be worth a purchase knowing it's no where near finished but I couldn't really recommend it at full price until they flesh out more parts of the game.

The SCHMUP is passable The tactical RPG is overly simplistic The porn would be good if Illusion games weren't a thing, but 10-15 second animation loops with almost no camera control falls a bit short, but its good enough The plot for the story is fine but it all goes to shit with the writing. Unfortunately they tried to hard to turn every bit of dialogue into a sex joke and overdid it, the constant 4th wall breaking early on is also overdone. Sometimes a little goes a long ways. The end result is an unfortunate cringe fest. The "waifus" really don't deserve to be called that. Visually the designs range from ok to good but falling in line with the cringey writing they go to crap when it comes to character and personality. They are all 1-dimensional, and I don't mean in the 'cliche archetype' sense, but rather that they are all raging nymphos whos entire existence revolves around sex. This is, more or less, the difference between porn and erotica. It's something you can fap to, certainly, but there's no real attachment to the characters. A lot of people haven't figured this out yet but feminism got it backwards with male gaze theory, men lusting after women doesn't happen due to a lack of respect but rather men and women in general will lust more after someone they respect. Basically, the lackluster characters will never be anyone's waifu, they will never be more than porn because the writer themselves never saw anything more than porn.
