Description
In Stygian: Reign of the Old Ones, the player journeys from a doomed Arkham into the depths of the Abyss. Create your own character based on 1920's archetypes and carve a path through a broken and mysterious world.

Your desperate battle against forces beyond comprehension will haunt you until the end. Physical combat will be challenging, spellcasting will have dire consequences, and your sanity will be strained to the breaking point by unknown abominations. Sometimes the best solution will be to flee what lurks beyond the threshold.

Features:
  • A hand drawn 2D world reflecting Lovecraft's themes of cosmic horror and dread.
  • Enemies, environments and storylines inspired by Lovecraft’s iconic original works. Take part in quests inspired by your favorite stories and see them play out according to your own decisions and role-playing style.
  • Choose from 8 main character Archetypes, each with its own origin backstory and specialties.
  • A host of weird companions will accompany you on your ill-starred journey: the lonely, antediluvian 'Outsider', a fallen soldier of the Great War reanimated by Herbert West. Recruit these and other outlandish beings to your crew.
  • Your character's Sanity and mental state will influence dialogue options. Mental illness comes with advantages as well as hindrances. Sometimes it pays to be mad in a world gone mad!
  • Stygian's Belief System determines how your characters cope with the warped reality of the new Arkham, as well as the rate at which they regenerate lost Sanity. Belief Systems also offer unique dialogue options, expanding the breadth of role-playing possibilities.
  • A new kind of spell system which sometimes takes more than it gives. Being a master of the occult is not as simple as flinging colored missiles from your fingertips. The black magic of Stygian is potent but may cost you your mind, your health, and possibly even much more.
  • Strategic, turn-based combat from a 2D perspective, similar to the classic Heroes of Might and Magic games.
  • The struggle in Stygian is not to save the world, for that battle is lost already. Pursue your own goals in these end times: salvation, vendetta, or perhaps something darker.

The Mythos Realized

Stygian is a game that understands - truly understands - the cosmic themes involved in a well-told Lovecraftian tale. Your character is doomed, whether they are aware of it or not. You are at liberty to fight against the hopelessness, but the universe of the Mythos is dark, cold, and alien. Nothing is concerned with the meaning of human life except the deluded or aggressively defiantamong humans themselves. Your story here might have a fair share of arguably heroic moments - depending, of course, on how you choose to overcome your challenges - but it is not the story of a hero. It is the story of an individual who is grasping for understanding where there might be none. Your missions revolve around unravelling the dreadful tangle of mysteries and tragedies all around you, including your own. You are not here to kill Cthulhu - you are here to survive, maybe, with as much of your mind intact as you can manage. Or - to hell with it, why hold on to old ways when the world is mad now, too? Yes - giving in is an option. I have sought a game in this Mythos, crafted this way, for years. This is the closest any game maker has ever come. If you are looking for a game with a conclusion, look elsewhere. If you are looking for that empty, empty sea of grasping existential fear - you have found it. Put your money here and pray to the Old Ones that more game makers will learn just what a gem this is and start up work on more of the same. This is my first review, and might be my last. I have watched Stygian struggle, and I wish it didn't have to. I hope my humble review inspires another. Well done, Stygian. Truly, well done.

Fallout 1, Monkey Island and HOMM vibes

f you miss buying stuff with bottle caps, bartering and the battles of HOMM, or if you liked the witty dialogues of the Monkey Island, you will probably like this game. But this time it is a horrific and twisted world that you will experience. + The atmosphere is strong, Easy to get lost in the details of the hand-drawn world. + Roleplaying has in-game benefits. I realized that this organic relationship between roleplaying and character development was the missing element I was looking for in so many games. + Character creation options that you can spend hours playing around. + Well written story and clever dialogue options. + Mechanics such as researching while resting, crafting and sanity points are meaningful and fun. + Full of well-thought details that you get to discover if you are careful. + Angst system is just awesome. You can pick your own mental condition. + Strategic elements of combat. Fleeing mechanic. -If what you need is a fast developing story, an action packed game or a game where you can level up your character to be invincible then this game is probably not for you. -The videos glitch in my Intel HD graphics 620.

Madness!?!

This is a game about madness. It's buggy as hell and absolutely epic when it comes to user-UNfriendliness. And it's been 7 months since release. I can't imagine how it was on day 1. If I had played it then, I would probably book first available flight to Istanbul and do some horrible things to the devs before sacrificing them to Cthulhu himself. This is a game about madness and I just...can't stop...playing it! In Cultic Games they obviously house some incapable bastards, sadistic pricks and conjurors of most vile binding spells! I've been playing until 1AM, tried to sleep, it's 6AM now when I'm writing this. Usually, I'm neither insomniac nor early bird. This is a game about madness and it's making me go insane. How brilliant...is that?!? O.o

ALMOST!!!!

I'll be brief and focused. + The writing is phenomenal. It almost reaches the (unreachable) Planescape Torment level of story and character writing. + The game incorporates Lovecraft classics into its own story like no other game before. It is a HUGE + for every Lovecraft fan! + The world is totally insane but also believable in its own strange way, thanks to the writing again. + The art style and the overall atmosphere (including sound design and music) is also remarkable. + The game's sanity-system is exceptionally enjoyable, humorous, weird and overall good. (yes, thanks to the writing... again!) + There is a mission in the game which I will never forget, and deserve a place in the imaginary hall of fame of the best RPG missions of all time. BUT!!! (some tiny-little-minor spoilers ahead) - Note, when you buy the game, that the story is NOT finished. It will literally end when it really starts, in the climax of the main storyline, which can create a strong sense of deficiency in the player. (I almost died from it. :( ) - The game is buggy. Playable, but buggy and there are still some bugs that can crash your game, and you need to load a previous save file to get rid of it. (note that the developers working on this night and day!) - I beat the game first time in 18 hours, which is not bad for an indie game but a little short for an RPG that is ambitious like Stygian. - IT IS SCREAMS FOR A SEQUEL!!!! (It is not that bad, but also YES! it is, because the unfinished feeling, what the story leaves behind.) OVERALL: I recommend the game for everyone who loves good writing, good RPG-s, and good Lovecraftian stories. That's it... But also remember: The game is full game in its own right, but the story is just half a story. Huge heartfelt thanks for the developers for this real gem! !cthulhu fhtagn ph'nglui mglw'nafh cthulhu r'lyeh wgah'nagl fhtagn!

A piece of art in the gaming industry

From the very first moment you lunch Stygian, you understand it's not one of the other millions of games out there. It has been made with passion, knowledge, and amazing skills, and all of these things shine through in every single istant in the game. The hand drawings are beautiful, the story is simply captivating, and the lovecraftian atmosphere perfectly rendered. The dialogues and stories are incredibly well written and the references to Lovecraft's work are perfectly placed and accurate. I have rarely played a game of such quality. The game mechanics are also very fun to use, and while I feel the combat system could be polished slightly (for example, some icons to click become obstructed when many characters are close together), the overall experience is just great. Go over the occasional bug and let yourself be mesmerised by this game, you will not regret purchasing it even at full price.
