Description
Journey to distant Arabian lands renowned for brave warriors and fearsome weaponry in Stronghold Crusader HD. The highly anticipated sequel to the best-selling Stronghold, Crusader throws you into historic battles from the Crusades with fiendish AI opponents, new units, 4 historical campaigns and over 100 unique skirmish missions.

Relive the historic Crusades as Richard the Lionheart and the Saladin, Sultan of Syria. Lead a determined group of Crusaders, forged by centuries of barbaric warfare, amidst the haze of the desert heat then fight for your freedom as the mighty Saladin.

Stronghold Crusader HD features several campaigns documenting the First, Second and Third Crusades, as well as conflicts within the individual Crusader states. Battles such as Nicea, Heraclea, siege of Antioch, Krak des Chevaliers and the Siege of Jerusalem all feature, as do the Crusader Trails from the Stronghold Warchest and Stronghold Crusader Extreme.

With new high resolution graphics you have more control over your soldiers than ever before. The new HD battlefield view allows you to zoom out and play in real-time, with the whole map on one screen. Advance on the castle gates while flanking the enemy from behind, feign retreat and lead your foe into a deadly trap or just sit back and watch the destruction unfold.

Both Stronghold Crusader and Stronghold Crusader Extreme are included in Stronghold Crusader HD. Extreme plays exactly like the original Stronghold Crusader, only with a few additions. The unit cap has been increased from 1000 to a staggering 10,000 troops, special Tactical Powers such as the Arrow Volley can be used and new buildings make their appearance alongside the Crusader Extreme skirmish trail.

  • Join the Crusaders or the Saladin’s forces in four historical campaigns.
  • Design and build your desert fortress complete with new siege engines and castle defenses.
  • Fight through 100 unique skirmish missions, each more challenging than the last.
  • Command new units with unique abilities, such as the stealthy Assassin and nimble Horse Archer.
  • View the entire battlefield on a single screen with support for new HD resolutions.
  • Play the original game on Windows XP, Vista, 7, 8 and 10 with added compatibility.

Classic Stronghold Crusader (Windows & Mac) is included as bonus goodie.

Uh oh, here comes another cow!

Stronghold Crusader is a medieval geek's paradise. Not only do you get to build and siege castles, but you get to do it in ways that other games haven't even tried to explore. When I was young, I used to love books about medieval castles. To my delight, many of the cooler siege aspects that I had completely forgotten about were covered in this game. Catapulting disease-ridden cows--check, preparing and pouring boiling oil--check, you can even lay down pitch that you can light on fire with fire arrows. The combat in this game isn't perfect, though the realistic aspects (missiles have realistic trajectories, for instance) make up for limited formation options. As much fun as building walls and besieging them is there's many more layers of depth in the gameplay. Besides combat and defense, there is the whole economic aspect of the game. It basically plays like a simplified city building game like Pharaoh or Caesar with popularity and food being the most important resources. Also, there are optional "good things" and "bad things" you can place that affect your popularity, efficiency, and troop strength. Also, these things really help to spruce up and otherwise ordinary looking castle. Speaking of charm, this game has plenty of it. While not as graphically impressive as its predecessor, it really is fun to watch your city in action. The sounds are also well done, with voicing being occasionally corny and flat but still entertaining. When you first hear your soldiers yell out a battle cry before charging or your archers in your towers firing a barrage of fire arrows you'll get a warm fuzzy feeling that will warm your heart. The game features four campaigns, though they are basically extended tutorials. The real meat of the game is in the Crusader Trail and multiplayer. The former is a series of skirmishes that get increasingly challenging as your progress. While there isn't really a story for any of it, its great if you just want to sit down and build and besiege castles for an hour or two. I'm very busy nowadays, so this is the perfect kind of game for me. Oh yeah, and it has desert ninjas.

Classic Stronghold felt so much better

This game is straight forward continuation of classic Stronghold edition. Major changes are some new units and builings (mostly arabic units that you can buy as mercenaries) and gameplay - it's not defend or assault castle any more. Each player builds its own castles on big map. For some people it may be interesting for me it's awfull. Tried to play this games twice and no success - it's not even close as enaging and interesting as its predecessor. Campaing, as far as I got to, is boring. Basically each scenario is about you and enemy on map. You build your castle defence, you prepare and launch assault, over. Also I don't like the new economy design. You start each scenario with huge amount of money so castle development and managament is now so much different. This particular game package consists of standard Stronghold Crusader and extreme version. Extreme version is ridiculously difficult and only for great great fans. Standard version is downloadable as additional content and offers normal campaigs. All in all it's still good game because it's continuation of one the best RTS I ever played. If you don't mind new gameplay you gonna like it. If you fell in love with previous Stronghold you may be disappointed. For me it was unfortunately the great disappointment.

Quite Possibly the Best RTS Ever

I have spent an impossibly large amount of time playing RTS games. I've played every Command & Conquer, every Ensemble Studios game, Total War, Supreme Commander, StarCraft, as well as dozens of others; not to mention every Stronghold game. However, if I had to choose my single favorite, it would probably be Stronghold Crusader. Partly, it's because it looks and sounds great even 10 years later. This game may not be in true 3D like Age of Mythology (also 2002), but you'll come to understand why when you have several thousand soldiers on screen simultaneously. I really like the sound design: the soundtrack is great and I actually enjoy the guy who verbally notifies you when "your granary is full, my liege". Most of the reason that it's my favorite, though, is personal taste and how this game manages to hit all of my favorite features. I've always loved turtle tactics and defense building, and I like a slower, more strategic RTS. Crusader exemplifies all of these qualities in spades. You can literally build any castle imaginable. You can employ hundreds of archers and dozens of ballistae. You can dig enormous moats, hire slaves to set enemy castles on fire, send assassins to scale their walls, set upon them with catapults, or (my personal favorite) make an army of knights and siege machines so huge it completely overruns your enemies. This game is literally Minecraft in RTS form; you can spend hours coming up with new strategies and castles. To sum up, the two best things about this game are the castle-building and seemingly unlimited population limits (I think it's 10,000). However, this game is probably not for RTS newbies: frankly, for an RTS, it's pretty complicated and daunting, but once you get the hang it, it becomes like second-nature. It also could be a good stepping stone to games like Total War and Sins of a Solar Empire. In my opinion, it hits a sweet spot in terms of complicatedness. If I was to choose one RTS to bring to a desert island, I would probably choose Stronghold Crusader. It's not only the best Stronghold game, but possibly the best RTS game. By the way, as a note, there was no nostalgia involved in this rating. I first played this game in 2010 in its low-resolution form, and I still loved it.

Multiplayer working

It was difficult to get the multiplayer working, but finally we discovered that everyone had to turn off their firewalls and install a program called Hamachi. Then it worked fine.
