Description

This version contains Strategic Command WWII: Community Pack DLC

Strategic Command WWII: War in Europe is a deeply immersive turn based strategy game covering the greatest conflict in modern history.

Take control over either the Axis or the Allies, while directing the efforts of each nation belonging to your alliance. From this unique perspective, you will be the supreme mastermind behind the entire conduct of operations, deciding the priorities, the strategies, and coordinating your global efforts to win the war!
Each nation in your coalition will have their own strengths and weaknesses, levels of technology, troops, equipment, and industrial capacity, and it will be up to you to make the best use of all of them!

Wage war across land, sea and air, employing a wide range of historical units combined with multiple avenues of technological upgrades. With research and development, the demands of combat and limited resources, balancing the day to day requirements of the war against your long term strategy will all be critical to ultimate success and victory.

Diplomacy and espionage will also be key tools to employ against your enemy as a war like this cannot be fought solely with military forces. Manage your relationships with neutral powers – encourage or pressure them to join your alliance, support your war effort or deny their resources to the enemy!

Through careful management of your resources, judicious research choices, wise strategic choices and brilliant deployment of your military plan, you can shape the outcome of this terrible conflict whilst continually competing against one of the most advanced AIs ever made. In Strategic Command the enemy will counter attack you every time, taking advantage of your weak points, setting traps for your forces, while waging a brutally efficient campaign on every front.

Fury Software's aim with the Strategic Command series has always been to recreate World War II in a deep yet very accessible manner. Experienced wargamers will find much to love in it!

Bad control and German translation

The game is a very good strategy game and does many things right. I don't want to list all that again here but focus on the three big negative points: 1) The controls are really bad. No WASD map scrolling, no simple shortcuts for most commands, and even the command buttons at the bottom of the screen are not sufficient in all situations; some things can only be done via the context menu. It can be annoying to have to upgrade a dozen units with several clicks for each. 2) The manual is outdated - enormously outdated. 3) Translations aren't really supported. Yes, there is something like a German translation but it is partly very bad, someone seems to have used first hits from a automatic translation, for example »plain« (for a hex field) is translated as »klar« instead of flach, eben or offen. The game also does not support translations properly. It has placeholders for *parts* of a word. So »Logistikentwicklung« must be written as »Logistik entwicklung«, and such translations occur everywhere. In addition, everything is automatically capitalised in many places. This is correct for English headings, but completely wrong in German. If you advertise a game with a German translation, this will also be included in the rating. And this translation is so bad that I wouldn't even call it such. I would give three or four stars for the English version. Its weaknesses are points 1 and 2.

Terrific Game!

This game compares very well to Clash of Steel, only much more detailed and comprehensive. Solid replayability. Only reason it doesn't get 5 stars is that I wish the AI was better/more creative in providing unique, challenging opposing strategies.

Hearts of Iron for Dummies

This game was very polarizing for me, it had moments of pure greatness and moments of astonishing stupidity:- Pros: * The multiplayer is very balanced online regardless of faction, * It's very simple with complex systems very easy to pick up and learn without reading the manual, * The campaign is very customizable, the editor is user friendly & great for professional modders, * The Ai is extremely competent and calculating, * The community is still active and thriving despite the game being released back in 2016. Cons: * The game is historical till its not for eg I broke through the Maginot Line and drove up to Paris as I captured Paris a script ran stating Belgium has surrendered when I didn't even declare war on them or had troops march inside, * The campaign is gamey, you can cheese this for eg I landed 4 Paratroopers and took Portsmouth with its Harbor enabling all my divisions to bypass the Royal Navy in the same turn and surrounded London, * The developers swear the Ai doesn't get advantages but on normal difficulty they just pump out units and you get a historical maritime power with a weak military become an absolute Jack of all trades; in 1948 after I eliminated the USSR there wasn't a free hex as all were occupied by the many legions of UK non home guard troops (not historically accurate), *No espionage or subversive elements eg as the UK player I cant send commandos across the Atlantic wall or attempt to supply partisans, * The developers made & poorly implements a supply system similar to the Order of Battle for HOI 3 but extremely finicky, * Engineers/Pioneers are useless in real life they built supply depots, rail lines and upgraded existing infrastructure! I love this game it just pisses me off.

Decent war game with some flaws

Overall, this very much feels like a Panzer General style game with an overarching strategic layer. It's a nice step up in complexity without being over the top daunting. I did have to spend quite a few hours in the manual. The supply system adds some nice additional complexity. I've enjoyed playing the campaign a couple times from the Axis and Allied sides. There's a few interesting alternate history/events that can add some flavor to how a campaign plays out, but overall my multiple playthroughs felt pretty similar which limits my desire to replay it. There are flaws. The interface feels dated and sometimes annoying (hitting ESC minimizes the game instead of bringing up a menu like in EVERY other game). The game gets slow and tedious as the number of units grow. You can't tell a unit to move across Europe over multiple turns with one click - instead you have to move each unit every single turn. The manual is simply incorrect at times; it does not get updated when patches change mechanics which can lead to some aggravating times trying to figure out exactly how some things work. There's a bunch of different units in the game, but most of them seem largely useless or unnecessary. The AI is pretty underwhelming. The events system provides some ability to change the course of the game. Some are interesting, like being able to buy Spain into the war if you completely conquer France instead of creating Vichy France. Other decisions are ultimately meaningless. For example, you can choose to occupy all of Poland and piss off the Soviets which might seem bad. But the Soviets will join the war in 1941 no matter what you do, so this decision really doesn't matter. It leads to a feeling like many of the decision events in the game don't matter much, they'll just provide a minor flavor variation of pretty much the same campaign. At 60% off it feels like an okay value. I wouldn't recommend it at anywhere near full price.

A fine war game

This is the best, most accessible WWI game I've played (not that there are a lot of such games out there). The systems are easy to understand, the gameplay is engaging, and the game is easily modded with the included editor. The campaigns tilt toward historical outcomes, which makes them predictable and a bit boring overtime. However, player decisions and moves can change things up, and computer allies and enemies tend to adjust in appropriate ways. You can play as a single nation or as one of the two alliances. The saving grace for this game is that the developers had the foresight to allow the player to easily modify the game with the editor, and they included many in-game options and settings that can significantly change gameplay. Without these options, some players would likely find the game too hard on even normal difficulty, especially if you are playing as the Central Powers. The main issue is that the AI is quite competent (which is good) but gets a huge amount of default cheats, including free units, free research and technology, free diplomatic bumps, and other advantages. I know that the purpose of these cheats is to keep the game challenging and to recreate the slogging, stalemate nature of WWI warfare. However, just repeatly reliving known history is not too much fun in a video game, so I am thankful that the developers made it fairly easy to change the game's perimeters. It is easy to recommend this game. I only play single player, but I assume that it would be great in multiplayer as well. I also have the WWII version of this game series, but I think that this one is better overall. I'd love to see a Strategic Command game based on the Napoleon era.
