A bit bland
I don't remember what drew me to this game, and the devs clearly put a lot of work on it, but at the end I abandoned it halfway through. The visual design is pretty enough, but uninspired. The stages are visually different, but in practice basically the same over and over again. The music is there, I suppose, but I never noticed it. The animations are good, and there's a certain charm to the characters' visual design. Controls (with a controller) are solid and responsive. The fights themselves, which should be the core of a game like this, are bland. You are mostly not in control of your abilities, ending up with something close to a spectacle fighting game, but sadly without the spectacle. At the end, you just dash around (an ability that to their credit is very satisfying) with your right stick vaguely pointing in the direction of enemies, and let the character do its thing. The plot and writing are trite and poorly done. The characters are old archetypes with no interest to them. Their abilities are different, and they feel vaguely different during combat, but with the combat system being what it is, it doesn't matter much. There are many systems in place, but they can be safely ignored. Trying to land combos, or use the secondary ability, just makes your damage a bit higher; they just don't change gameplay at all. There's encouragement to be fast at clearing stages (with rewards for it), but the speed is dictated by the enemies (sometimes they appear all at once, sometimes it takes them a long time to even show up), so it's out of your hands. In summary, I think this game could have been a lot more. Perhaps the devs ran out of resources. Because I see the potential, I'll keep my eyes open for their next game.
