Stonekeep

Hi, Stonekeep, is a (FPS)(RPG), average graphics, although you can tinker the advanced graphics available - in the directory. Interesting and unique dungeon hack. One weapon in each hand, inventory is on the right screen edge and a mirror displaying your character and the items you choose to outfit. You need to find the journal on the second level to open up - stats, clues, maps, add your own notes, spell runes, item summaries - click upper left corner. Collect - keys, scrolls, potions, weapons, armor, arrows, spell runes, items from corpses + more. The maps allow you to record your own notations. The keys are auto set - (W or forward arrow, S or backward arrow, A or left arrow, D or right arrow), others like - maps, clues, journal, inventory, mirror - see the manual. Increase stats like - Strength, Agility, Health, Magic, Defense + more. Battle - bugs, ants, various creatures. Download the walkthrough, I think you will need it, (ex: wind sound - provides a nearby invisible door). NPC's voice speeches + chatter, sound effects, eerie music. Freedom of exploration (hit). Overall a good (RPG)(FPS) dungeon hack. YxDDVxY

Worse than Dungeon Master or Eye of the Beholder 1 & 2, but still a great game with funny voice acting, hilarious scenes and nice dungeon to explore. Not everyone will like the graphics (especially characters. dungeon walls are pretty nice) nor lack of rest/eating management, but it is worth to spend few bucks and few hours.

I've always found it difficult to get into this genre of game. The controls have been a fiddle, the game mechanics have been clunky, or the puzzles have been unfair. Stonekeep has been easy to pick up and play, and has a vitality that sucks you in. I found an hour of play time passed without me noticing! I would seriousy recommend this title to anybody who might have dismissed this genre in the past in favour of more action orientated titles .... its great!

STONEKEEP is not a bad game. It's just OK. You play as Drake, a pre-defined character. What made this game so special when it came out were the digitalized characters. Unfortunately by the time STONEKEEP hit the shelves the graphics were already outdated but the Dungeons and enemies still looked pretty good. The voice acting however is another story. Some characters are clearly played for laughs - Wahooky - but seem out of place. What this game does offer is a rather high difficulty, good combat and a good character progression (you improve skills by using them). What I found rather terrible was the inventory system: a scroll serves as your backpack and it only shows 5 items at a time. Have fun scrolling that scroll (no pun intended) up and down while looking for an item. At least the game is paused while you fumble with that inventory. You can have up to three NPCs join your party, however you only control Drake. The other party members fight by themselves while remaining in formation (all four squeeze into one row). However you can steal and equip their equipment. Overall it's a pretty good dungeon crawler, with a few fresh ideas at its time but nothing special.

I remember being intrigued by this game when it first came out. The production values were evident in the innovative packaging and the graphics. Well, the state of the art has long since passed this game by. This game is similar to Dungeon Keeper in that you have to micromanage your inventory and experiment with new items to figure out what is best to use in what situation. The game falls short in the mechanics of these actions. While all the clicking may have been normal back in the day, today's games are much more streamlined. These clicks are just frustrating. One example. To open a locked door is 5 clicks minimum. More if you have to scroll the tiny inventory window, and even more if you chose the wrong key. Bleh. I would say this game is only for those with fond memories or a deep love of retro gaming.
