loved it

So glad I got this game, I really enjoyed playing it. It has a great story, the swapping between the two characters added to the fun, great graphics, good voices, good puzzles, it sort of flows along without making you constantly think 'where the hell do I go next?' As a lady gamer thats not into shooting/magic spell/war games, its hard to find adult games that keep me interested to the end, this was just perfect, so buy it and enjoy !

Uneven experience

Nice story, great design (graphism and sound). the detextive story is not exceptionnal but nice enough so you'll want to follow it. The environements are beautiful, not aged at all. The problems are mostly the puzzles. Very few inventory puzzles (or so easy they don't cuont), a lot of pixel hunting and myst-like puzzles. Machinery, safes to open, lock to pick... All those mini games are out of place, often difficult (even unfair for some) and break the rythm. The game is absolutely linear so there is no point in doing something else when you're stuck on one. Frustration guaranteed. Nobody wil bame you for using a waklthrough in this game (which is sad because some of the puzzles are quite good if you figure them by yourself). That and the emptiness of the otherwise beautiful places you'll visit (not nearly enough hotspot), really lower the enjoyement I ight have had. I don't say it's a bad game, it still has a lot of charm, but be aware of that before buying.

Must-play adventure game from the 2000's

Still Life is one of the best adventure games from the early 2000's. If you enjoyed Siberia 1 and 2, The Longest Journey or Riven, then you'll probably like Still Life. In my opinion, Still Life should be on the list of "Best 100 Adventure Games of All Time" right beside Syberia. It's best described as Syberia for a mature audience. By that I mean the core elements that made Syberia one of the best adventure games of all time are present in Still Life. Syberia is suitable for nearly everyone including older children, while Still Life definitely is not. This is due to Still Life's mature content which includes strong (but realistic) adult language, nudity, bloody crime scenes and violence in some of the cut scenes. Definitely nothing over the top, but certainly not appropriate for children. The Mature ESRB rating is justified. But this is a GREAT adventure game for adults and teens. The Good: - Excellent and memorable story - Memorable protagonist and supporting characters - Great graphics (for the time) - Exceptionally well-done cut scenes (again, for the time) - Top-notch voice acting - Very good audio and music - Good logical puzzles with a few exceptions - Save Anywhere with Unlimited Save slots The Not So Good: - Sometimes it's not clear where you should go or what you should do next - Backtracking - A few difficult puzzles that will require a walkthrough (especially the lockpicking puzzle) - Some easy to miss hot spots (i.e. pixel hunting) But to be fair these criticisms were a common trait of all adventure games from the 2000's. So don't let this minor blemishes stop you from playing this excellent, classic game.

A very good game overall

The storyline was interesting with Victoria and her Grandfather figuring as protagonists. As a downunder person some of the FBI jargon was hard to take (I guess I've not seen enough American detective movies -- it took me longer to work out what MO stood for, than solving even the hardest puzzle: why not say modus operandi?) On puzzles, and no spoilers, the robotic spider puzzle must have been thought up by a cruel sadist. There were one or two other sufficiently challenging puzzles to tax the grey matter, and at least the nature of the puzzles had relevance to the given scenario -- not always the case with these adventure games. Too many cutscenes for my liking, but I guess this is the modern trend. Sepia Prague was gloomy/depressing (as fitting), and for someone who never experiences snow even in midwinter, Chicago made me shiver watching Victoria walking about outside in her very short skirt. Again, no spoilers, but the finale was clearly set up for a sequel and, as another reviewer pointed out, it now exists (however, note that is now priced US$11.24 on Microids). I will wait for a bit to see if GOG acquires SL2, and undercuts the Microids price.

fantastic adventure with some flaws

This point and click adventure game is top notch, from the beautiful hand painted art, fluid animations and top tier puzzles and incredible moody music. the game is very atmospheric, the art work immerses the player in the gritty world. Its not scary per se, just creepy. The voice acting is good, the lead character likeable, the puzzles are very innovative and can be brain teasers. Interface is easy to use with options for mouse, or keyboard. mouse is what i used with no problems. Why the one star deduction? Its biggest flaw is a simple one to fix, having skippable animation ability. That highly realistic animation for elevator gets real old for the 100th time. Same for traveling, always a long animation sequence when all you want to do is quickly go back and pick up that item for another puzzle. The biggest downer of all was for a maze puzzle with every failure you had minutes of redoing animations in order to just get back to where you failed at, only to fail again and have to redo the animation sequence again. Im sure this one puzzle had the most downvoting for the game, like I said, its a shame. All they needed to do was put in that skip option and it would have been sweet sailing. there are some pathing problems in the game and your character can be hung up on corners for awhile till they sort it out. Other than that is was perfect. Be sure to let the credits play out for some ending scenes. I used a walkthru to get thru that horrid puzzle, without which there is no way I could have finished the game, which would have been a loss as its almost a perfect point and click adventure game.
