Can only buy one DLC ? This is the one.
This DLC adds essential gameplay mechanics, the Ascention Perk alone is something you can't play without once tried. Simply put, all that this DLC contains should be in the game. The price in an other hand, is quite high. But when compared to what the Apocalypse DLC adds, Utopia is worth its price.

Pay trough your nose
Utopia improves the base game in a lot of ways. From meaningful political traits you pick at the creation of your Empire to interesting ascension perks you aquire during mid game and finally awesome mega structures you can build late game. As other reviewers said, if you're not sure which DLC to get, this should probably be your first choice. It's still not worth the price of a full fleged expansion in my opinion, so I recommend waiting for a sale.

Good DLC but too expensive
It's a really good DLC to enhance gameplay entertainment and capabilities, the BIGGEST DOWNSIDE for this DLC is the price, it is ridiculous!!!

Adds a lot of variety to play with
It may not look like it brings in much new content, but it terms of new gameplay options, it's can really change things up, especially if you're the type that roleplays your empires in this game. Yes, it's expensive, if you have the patience then wait for a sale. + Go full zerg with a Hive Mind + Devouring Swarm species. You can largely ignore the claims system and war exhaustion and all the things that stop you taking over the galaxy without stopping. + You can also go aggro as a Fanatic purifier + Build 'tall' with habitats and ringworlds, letting you have a very dense empire if you so choose + Block out the sun with a Dyson Sphere + Psionic powers In short, it really helps different species feel much more unique, rather than just having a different set of percentage buffs, and there's some cool things to build in lategame

Required DLC
Stellaris just isn't Stellaris without this DLC. So much of the game mechanics that make Stellaris famous and unique are part of this expansion. Utopia should just be bundled with the base game. If you have Stellaris in your shopping cart, add Utopia to the order. It's worth the price.
