Description
Stellaris: Apocalypse is a full expansion which redefines stellar warfare for all players with a host of new offensive and defensive options. Destroy entire worlds with terrifying new planet-killer weapons, fight against (or alongside) ruthless space pirates, and maybe discover a few non-violent game features as well.

The Apocalypse expansion includes:

THAT'S NO MOON, NEITHER IS THAT ONE, THAT ONE MIGHT BE A MOON, WAIT, NO
Keep the local systems in line with fear of the new “Colossus” planet-killer weapon – a technological terror that eliminates entire worlds from the universe

ALL YOUR BASE ARE BELONG TO YOU
New enormous “Titan” capital ships can lead your fleets to conquest, offering tremendous bonuses to the vessels under their command. Meanwhile, fortify key systems with massive orbital installations and secure your homeworld as an impenetrable bastion among the stars.

PIRATES OF THE CONSTELLATION
Watch out for Marauders – space nomads who raid settled empires and carve out their lives on the fringe of civilization. Hire them as mercenaries in your own conflicts, but take care that they don’t unify and trigger a new mid-game crisis!

SOME NON-VIOLENT FEATURES
New Ascension Perks and Civics are added in the expansion, along with new Unity Ambitions that provide new ways to spend Unity and customize your development.

SOUNDS OF DESTRUCTION
To accompany your planet-shattering expedition, three new musical pieces have been composed by Andreas Waldetoft for your listening pleasure.

More fun late game

This DLC mainly targets the late game. Ambitions are a much needed way to dump otherwise useless unity points when you already acquired all traditions, Titans complement your fleet when you're tired of the same old battleships all over and a planet killer is always nice to have. Just in case, you know. Marauders and their associated events keep you busy in mid game when you already massively outscaled the piss poor AI but endgame crisis events are still way ahead. That's especially welcome in patch 2.2 where you can't win the game by conquest before this point anymore. Like usual Apocalypse is massively overpriced but if on sale I'd say this is the second best DLC to get after Utopia.

Mostly great additions

This expansion provides very much needed end-game content. I loved being able to destroy worlds and build capital ships. Being able to include large ion cannons on starbases was loads of fun. It was also great to have special "edicts" I could spend unity on, once everything else has been unlocked. The mauraders are a mid-game crisis. They are impossible to deal with, if you are one of the non-diplomatic agressive races. They are incredibly overpowered, and weren't too much fun to play with. I usually turn them off. You can also play an under-powered maurader, with the "Barbaric Despoiler", which allows you to steal pops from other planets. Fun in theme, but not very useful. Same with choosing a Post-Apocalyptic race. Fun theme, not really practical. There are also a few new Ascension perks. One lets you kidnap enemy pops (great theme, you'll never use it), one that gives you increased sensor range and prevents other civs from reverse engineering your tech (multiplayer, maybe?), and the third allows you to build your "Death Star". Parts of it I love, and add great dynamics to a great game. The rest, I'll turn off.

Worthwhile

Beyond Utopia and Leviathans, which DLC you buy for this game really depend on what you want to get out of a game of Stellaris. Apocalypse adds a bunch of fun late-game technologies that are satisfying when you finally get them. I personally enjoy Marauders quite a bit as well. But DLC is still DLC at the end of the day.

Funny price

Apocalypse wasn't bad content, but when it came out in 2018 it was already very meh. It didn't fundamentally alter the game, it just adds encounters to the mid-game which steadily become irrelevant. 20 bucks is too much. As it stands, in 2022, this expansion isn't worth money. Get it as a package deal with all expansions, or just pirate.

Paradox DLC policy sucks

Yet another bit of content that should have shipped with the base game but Paradox, in their infinite wisdom, ripped out to sell as DLC...
