I found it was way over-rated. It's more sandbox than strategy. For a game with all it's research and science officers not to even have a viable science victory option seems shallow for me.. You explore, build ships and settle, yes fun in the beginning but soon you are totally blocked in and then it becomes repetitive and tedious. Diplomacy is extremely dull.
While it is pretty to look at, to call it a great "strategy " game just doesn't ring true for me...
I've played many many hours of this game and own it on Steam and GOG. I like suporting it because I'd love to see the development continue or even see a Stellaris II someday. I think the base game and the DLC are well worth the price. But if you are just curious, it's fine to jump in and play with only the base game and then pick and choose DLC that suites your interests.
That said, they have been makign some drastic changes to the game mechanics lately and it's not always great. I much preferred the old style of needing to research jump drives or FTL drives -- felt more natural that way if you are a fledgling space species.

Game turned to shit, its slow as fuck, have not played a game to end in last 6 months, you just made the game worse and I want my money back, cant for the love of me get it why i payed for the last DLC, and I knew game was geting worse and still gave it a chance, what a moron i am.
It is a great game, with a looooooooot of possibilities :-)
Unfortunately the DLCs are quite expensive. But most of them are worth it.
Nice to see, that this game is on gog from the release. Unlike newer games from Paradox. Quite a shame.
A lot of useful or very fun complete-overhaul mods are in the steam workshop only or harder to install on gog. I wish a cartel office would make the steam workshop accessible for everyone.
