Oh the irony...
Stardew valley is a dull and repetitive game with menial rewards and a gameplay loop that I assume only certain people might enjoy. By certain people I mean those who want a relaxed physical activity while listening to audiobooks or podcasts. I do that too albeit infrequently since I enjoy reading books but even for that purpose, stardew valley falls short in every aspect. I can either play a paradox game - which is entertaining and fun while listening to audiobooks - or factorio, or rocket league or so many other games in the vast bowels of digital store fronts. Opting stardew valley among so many competitors for the same price is akin to choosing mcdonalds when your girlfriend prepared you delicious meal. It's preposterous. I don't necessarily mind the grind - paradox and factorio is all about that grind - but there are limits to what is acceptable. In stardew, it's excessive and the rewards menial at best. The gameplay loop is mundane and I in all honesty can't fathom who or why someone would like or choose this game. The entire gameplay loop can be summed up as: - wake up - tend your crops and animals - go to town for more seeds and feed - go back to sleep - rinse and repeat That doesn't sound by itself, if the gameplay was engaging however it's janky, clunky and aimed at wasting your time, in order for the devs to justify an arbitrary price. In short quantity over quality. If you like that then so be it. It runs on any old igpu and pc but so do a lot of quality games that are cheaper than this and offer more replay value and engagement. For me stardew valley is a mundane profession, one that's hard to recommend and hard to enjoy. I assume the devs of this game completely missed the irony, otherwise they wouldn't have created a game, centered around a person quitting their lifesapping job, only for the players to end up doing mindless, repetitive and dull tasks ad nauseum. Similar to a lifesapping job in front of your screen...

This Seems Awfully Familiar...
Alright, I've put about 4 hours into the game and, so far, It's pretty good. Is it phenomenal? No, but then most games aren't. It's...well, pretty good. So, a few questions: Is this a ripoff of Harvest Moon? Well, kinda. It feels familiar to the older HM games, especially HM64. It feels like a HM game, but different enough. It does some things better than HM but it does a few things a bit worse, I think. For one, there's no tutorial and the game is a bit complex. Look at a wikia, reddit, or just be ready to write off your first game as a bit of trial and error. Also, the controls are sometimes a bit annoying, but not enough that it kills the game but it may be better with a controller. If I liked HM, should I get this? Yeah, honestly. While I can't say it's a brilliant game, I just blew 4 hours in one sitting and while it doesn't pull you deep into its immersion, it feels vaguely familiar. So, what's not good? HUD needs some work, honestly. 12 inventory slots at the beginning with minecraft-style pickups available like a veritable butt-load of stone, fiber (it's a bush, we all know it's a bush), wood, forageable plants and flowers, and several different miscellaneous items. Seriously, 12 isn't enough. Also, crafting isn't even mentioned at the beginning, but it's in the ESC menu, so be sure to build a chest first thing to store things. Otherwise, you're gonna have a bad time. Characters are easily forgettable as you meet them. Town's a touch confusing and would benifit form a bit more zoomed out view. Map is serviceable, but not by much. Doesn't show your real-time location, only a "you are in this area" which makes it difficult early game to get your bearings. But I already can't wait to go back. It's a good game and worth 15 bucks, easily. I have my gripes about it, but in the end, I believe with a bit of time in the game I'll come to love this town and it's inhabitants as much as HM64 tl;dr Good game. Loved HM64? Get this. You won't regret the price.

Beware, a less than positive review...
I saw the many, many videos of this game, the Let's Plays, the positive reviews, and I got really enthusiastic to play this. I cleared my schedule to take the time to immerse myself and enjoy the beautiful world. But after a few hours in, I realized I was still waiting for this game to become fun. I had accepted the slow pace of the events in the game with the idea that I would eventually find that which I wanted to do and focus on this. But all of the activities were just... boring. I found myself frustrated by the lack of control I actually had and the impact on the world around me. Once again, if I didn't do anything in the game, nothing would happen. I understand going out and meeting all of the townspeople, but after a month in-game still had the "quest" and still had to meet two people. But since the game doesn't tell you who you already met, I couldn't figure out how to complete this task. Why didn't these people come out and meet me instead? I wasn't looking for the game to hold my hand, but this is just one example of the game doing nothing to come towards me. Never does the game say "hey, how about doing this?", you have to have the idea that something might be possible, and try in which way the game lets you do it. It took me literal days to figure out I could adventure out into the wild and fight mobs, and I found that out because I was bored with watering plants day in and day out. I've been really trying to like this game. It looks really nice, but graphics alone don't make a great game. There's a lot of potential, but the slow pace, the lack of guidance and /or advice make for an annoying trial-and-error playstyle.
