Starbound

This Game has everything. You can explore planets, buy upgrades, and fight bosses. The storyline has a base of exploring planets, gathering data like a spy, then completing a dungeon and getting awesome loot. There is even a post endgame!!

I've heard Starbound called a Terraria clone a lot of times, but from my playtime on the game (I have 400+ hours logged on the Steam version) I can say it's not really trying to be Terraria, it focuses a lot more on the adventure aspect than the sandbox aspect whereas Terraria it's the other way around, here the focus is more on the story. On that note of course, let's just get this out of the way; the story is pretty boring, basically have a series of fetch quests preceded by a scavenger hunt for clues pertaining to the race of which the relic you're currently hunting belongs. I wish they would have gone the extra mile and made the story different for each race but it seems that unfortunately there was not much effort put into that area of the game. Starbound overall is a sort of "you like it or you don't" kind of game, me personally though I enjoy the gameplay a lot.

Beautiful game with a great deal of promise, but it's been in development a very long time. It's been worked and reworked over and over again. Mostly for the better, but I'm left wondering when it will ever end. There are billions of planets, moons, space stations and more you can explore of many different biomes, but the unfortunate reality is most of them won't have much of interest. Each planet draws from a "pool" of a few features that, once you see them, there's not much need to see a second time.

This could have been a really, really nice time sink. Basically, most of it is done right, but some things are just epic fails. Combat being the most prominent one. I really can't remember any combat system as atrocious as this one (I'm sure there are many, but they just don't come to mind). It basically takes away the fun this game delivers (when not in combat). The problem is not in the boss fights, but in regular combat during exploration. If you want to see a great example of how 2D combat can be done, take a look at Salt & Sanctuary. This grievance put aside, Starbound really shines. It's fun to discover stuff, explore, build and whatnot. If you follow the main quest line, you will occasionally be baffled what exactly to do next. That's not a problem of 'not holding hands' - it's due to some stuff not really being explained during the course of the game. If you chew through that, you'll be rewarded with a game you can 'live in' nicely for quite a while.
