The Best Space Combat Sim Ever!

Serve the Emperor in the best space combat sim ever! Instead of the somewhat gimicky 'play stuff and meet characters from the movies' of the original X-Wing, Tie Fighter brings its own story to the table and lets you see the Empire in a completely different light. Sure, you're on the side of 'evil' and don't you forget it; but this evil is portrayed in such a way that you can completely believe you're doing what's right to "restore order throughout the galaxy". Protect trade routes, break up interplanetary wars, and deal with Imperial traitors who sell arms to those pesky rebels. Each mission has secondary as well as secret (hidden) objectives that usually foreshadow parts of the plot. Do well and rise in the ranks of the Secret Order of the Emperor (and get an awesome force-tattoo). Personally I would always advise playing the *original* version rather than the Windows graphic update. Sure, the graphics are slightly worse, but what the DOS version has going for it is its absolutely excellent music that responds to what's happening in the game. The generic Star Wars music of the Windows version just realy really doesn't cut it in comparison. I guess you'll have to try it to hear what I mean.

Classic feel; solid gameplay and balance

This is one of my favorite games of all times and GOG has all the different versions as separate downloads with manuals; well done. Challenging but manageable difficulty (especially if you do just main mission objectives vs bonus), a variety of mission styles/goals, great music/sound effects (that iconic Tie scream!), many missions including non boring tutorials; this game isn't just nostalgia...although it is faithful to and invokes the original trilogies feel. I find the game to be less work using my 360 controller compared to the flight stick. x360ce 32 bit version works fine. I brought the stick sensitivity way down particularly vertically; 5 minutes well spent. I had the Steam version but it crashed when I went to fly a mission a few months ago on windows 7. They should be careful who they betray, not to name drop but I am the Emperor's Arm in his Secret Order (don't tell nobody) and it'd be a shame if one of their starbases happened to get in the way of Imperial Proton Torpedo's on Official Imperial Proton Torpedo Business, if you know what I mean. Accidents happen; it's a brutal galaxy. Sometimes games don't work, sometimes starbases find themselves in unfortunate flight paths. Glad I know who I can trust in these uncertain times.

One of the best PC games ever

The sequel to X-Wing puts you in the seat of the very vulnerable TIE fighter. With many improvements on it's predecessor, this game is one you can play for days, hours, months, especially if you want to achieve all the secret goals in every mission at the hardest setting. It is unfortunate that there is no version which includes the best of all worlds; the latest version has inexplicably replaced the original excellent IMUSE sound track with generic Star Wars music and really should have an option to choose which one you prefer. I also like the original cutscenes, introduction and screens over the new version for the most part and would again like the ability to choose which one is displayed. But the in flight graphics in the original version are not so great and the inability to customise controls means they really aren't an option in terms of playability. Hopefully one day the ultimate version will be released.

Near-Perfection

Don't get me wrong, TIE Fighter is the perfect game, with a great plot, wonderful gameplay and challenge, awesome music and graphics (for the time) and best of all, the innovative experience of fighting for the Empire and seeing the Star Wars universe through their eyes. Unfortunately, the best version isn't included- the 1995 Collector's Edition CD-ROM version. Instead, we're left with a choice of poor, blurry graphics, no voice acting, and the awesome interactive iMuse system, one of the best features of the game, or better, cleaner graphics, voice acting, and generic Star Wars music that lacks the context or excitement of the iMuse version. I'm guessing emulation issues are why we have to pick and choose instead of enjoying the best of both, and it's a shame. However, don't let this near-miss dissuade you- despite those flaws, it still might be the best $10 you ever spend.
