Description
It is a time of great rejoicing in the galaxy. Luke Skywalker, with the help of Wedge Antilles, has blown up the Death Star. But there is little time to celebrate. The mighty Empire is gathering strength for a determined, all-out assault on the Rebel forces.

To save the Rebel Alliance from this Imperial onslaught, Luke Skywalker and Wedge Antilles have assembled the Rogue Squadron, a group of twelve of the most skilled battle-tested starfighter pilots. You will fly into battle as Luke Skywalker, to engage in intense, fast-paced planetary air-to-ground and air-to-air missions ‒ dogfights, search and destroy, reconnaissance, bombing runs, rescue assignments, and more.
  • Take on the Galactic Empire in X-wings, Y-wings, A-wings, V-wings, and snowspeeders.
  • Prove you’ve got what it takes against a slew of the Empire’s best and baddest, including AT-AT walkers, AT-STs, TIE fighters and more.
  • Test your flying skill through extraordinary environments ‒ over water, through canyons, deserts, and volcanic regions.
  • Astonishing 3D details include real time lighting and special effects (explosions, smoke, engine glow, tracer fire and more).

Good to see it - but not working ATM

Listen to the reviewers. This has not been released it a fully working state. If you can get it to work (I was able to on my laptop but not my gaming PC) the graphics and controls are a pain to get right. I had to install a glide wrapper to get decent resolutions. The controller works but some of the controls make the ship fly away from the camera and it doesn't seem to properly recognise the analogue triggers. A keyboard and mouse combo would be good but the mouse aim doesn't work properly. So IF you can get it to work, chances are the controls will be janky in the extreme. Shame because I was looking forward to playing this. I'd wait until its fixed TBH.

Takes me back

I gave away my copy of Rogue squadron to one of my smaller nephews, it works but has scratches that cause me concern, now I can buy this and give him an .exe file in case his CD fries. Any ways, this game along with Pod Racer where the main games I've played of Star Wars, at least those I can remember and let me tell you, it is an absolute blast. You will be visiting multiple worlds, taking the fight to the Empire in different manners and even replay missions but using a different ship. Ever wanted to use a Y-wing instead of an A-wing and bomb the hell out of your enemies? You can! Also the genuine voice actors, dialogue and how 'real' the squadron feels is amazing. I felt part of a team and there's plenty of banter during the missions. Lock those X-wings and soar through the sky my friend, a must buy!

Very good game

Can be compared to a Star Wars version of Terminal Velocity. Missions are varied but too directive. Any straying will instantly result in a 'Mission failure' screen. Levels are too short, too easy or frustratingly hard. Even the medal reward system does not make the game highly replayable. I wish it was possible to fly high above the ground, in any direction, barrel roll, dive on targets. Instead of that, fighters are dull to pilot, very slow and handling in a strange way because of the engine. Most of the time, you will remain horizontal. It does not feel like real 3D. There also lacks levels in space! Yet, this game offers a great alternative for arcade lovers who might find X-Wing or Tie-Fighter games too complicated.

Classic Blast-Em-Up!

I had this for the N64 years ago, and am pleased to find that the PC version is nearly as good, though it's a bit harder to pull off moves like barrel rolls without the convenient closely-spaced buttons of a controller. If you're expecting something along the lines of X-Wing or TIE Fighter, you might be disappointed- this game is largely ground-based rather than in outer space, there's no intrigue or inspecting containers or taking apart capital ships pieces by piece- you just blow stuff up real good, and occasionally protect your Rebel allies from enemy fighters. That said, blowing stuff up is actually a lot of fun! This game has a lot of good points- a decent variety of craft to choose from, bonus unlockable levels and vehicles, hidden upgrades to your shields and weapons to be collected, and a range of environments and objectives that manages to stay interesting and exciting. Getting gold medals on all missions is a difficult but fair challenge, the game has decent voice acting (though some lines are used a bit too often), and the graphics were very good in their day- spectacular in terms of the N64, and certainly enough to keep the game enjoyable even today. So what are the bad points? The worst one is the draw distance, which is far shorter than it should be, to the point where tripping an AT-AT walker will lead to it vanishing in fog when the camera zooms out slightly in the short cutscene that's triggered. It's annoying not seeing things until you're almost on top of them, and this isn't a problem I remember in the N64 version. Second, there's a bug where the default camera doesn't lock onto your craft and it will zoom out infinitely- easily fixed by switching camera angles as soon as the missions starts, but a pain if you don't realize what's going on. Lastly... well, there are RIGHT ANGLES in the freaking Death Star trench, but I guess we can chalk that one up to an alternate history version of events, sort of like Rebel Assault. ;)
