As a kid, I owned both this and Age of Empires II, and I played and loved this around twice as much. I actually thought that Age of Kings felt sort of lacking after playing with Galactic Battlegrounds' completely unique (down to the last visual detail) races and broadened range of unit types.
its a great classic RTS style game! fairly cheap here and its got some decent campaings for its time and it has a map editor... basicly just a star wars verion of AOE1-2 :) hope this review helps yas out there! <3
Good news: this game is still a gem with fantastic gameplay and a good story.
Bad news: this release is frustrating to play because crashes often on Windows 10 64bit
First of all - I admit that I don't like too much Star Wars universe. Movies (no matter which one) are for my taste quite juvenile and lacking of those things, which are making interesting for me such universes as WH40k or even Starcraft. Plus, I admit that I'm not a big fan of Age of Empires II. I love the historical setting (medieval), but that's it.
After that, you could imagine that there is no way that I would enjoy this game. Yet... I did! It's truelly amazing, but I personally consider campaign's plot genuinly interesting (at least those parts which are presenting "non-movie" content, like history of uniting Gungan tribes in one of campaigns). Development of every race is approachable, and despite rather cosmetic differences between races, I still enjoyed a lot playing with most of them (maybe except wookies). My only complaint here would be that quite a lot of the Age of Empires II mechanics which were leaved here more or less intact are not fitting to the game - like walls and gates (turrets would be fine, but walls and gates seems to be rather obsolete for "galactic warfare") or pummels (it doesn't look like too serious - galactic rams, really?).
Clone campaigns add-on is also very nicely done - campaigns are extremelly hard in some places, but also very rewarding. It's true, that some maps are in fact "re-used" in second of new campaigns, but due to the fact that we're facing different challenges and situation on the battlefield, it's not a big issue for me.
Plus - it's actually quite cool feature that in skirmish mode you can fight between various fractions, despite the fact that they're coming from vastly different "times"and probably couldn't meet with each other, not to mention about fighting between themselves.
I just wish that GOG version could came with integrated modifications/patches allowing to play in any resolution... But since they're free to download, you can easily fix that thing. Overall - surprisingly good game, worth to try.
