Could be 5 star. but no...

I will be brief. The main core loop in this game is roguelite - you'll start over and over to grind some upgrades, and then you'll pass some heavy enemies, and after that... Ok, this could work if there was true random which randomizes bosses and enemies - at least it could relocate them via different sectors on map to make experience at least DIFFERENT. But as I can see it relocates only resources, not the enemies - and if relocation is somehow wrong and you didn't choose some overpowered heroes in your party from scratch, you're doomed. Because if you didn't save armour repair station and Med Kit before main boss fight... well, it's the matter of time before you loose. So you can spend one hour with half just to find out that the "great random" have distributed all the main stations in impossible combination on next planet - so there is no motivation to play, only to grind. Well, for example, Darkest Dungeon was unfair countless times, but at least it gave us hope, that ugly random could spare our parties sometimes, and every time you wasn't sure about it all. In this game if you took wrong heroes and got wrong random seed, you're doomed - and you can see it from the start. And this balance decision makes the idea of roguelite completely useless. Finally you'll understand that your runs are all the same: it's better to have one exact party, it's better to save resource stations, it's better to attack sectors in one designated chain - and in the end it won't work, because doing the same things isn't fun, And that's the point, there you can understand, that this game could be excellent, but all you can give is three stars out of five because of poor design choices.

Beautiful and addicting GOTY candidate

After licking Halcyon 6 a lot, I was excited about STAR RENGADES from the day it was first announced. And now that it is finally out, it is everything I hoped for and more. First, the game is incredibly beautiful, reminding me of both Octopath Traveller as well as Metal Slug regarding its sheer amount of detail and incredibly detailed animations. In terms of its gameplay, it bases loosely on Halcyon 6, but only in its foundation. There has been some confusion whether Star Renegades utilizes real-time or turn-based and to be be clear: the game's TURN BASED. However, STAR RENEGADES uses time as an integral part of its combat. Each round lasts 60 seconds and attacks take specific time to execute. This allows to order your attacks and hitting an enemy before they hit you makes it a critical which comes with its own benefits. That way you can also delay an enemy attack, even push them out of the round (Break). And that's just the beginning. From here, the game opens up, adding more complexity as you play with different attack types, elemental damages, (de)buffs, combos and much more. It's easy to understand, but hard to master as you want to carefully plan your steps, delaying heavy attacks and making time for your heroes to exploit the enemy weaknesses if possible. It's VERY addicting and even with certain elements of the game being subject to randomization, there is headroom to make mistakes - at least at the beginning. Speaking of randomization, the Roguelite elements of the game are actually fairly lite (pun intended), but especially noteworthy are the adversaries - the enemy hero units so to speak - they're uniquely generated and depending on the outcome with their battles with you, they may level and evolve as well. I could go on forever, but instead let me just repeat myself: STAR RENEGADES has turned out to be so much more than I hoped for and it's already on my list of Game Of The Year candidates. JUST. GET. IT!

Excellent game, but not for everyone

It is not easy to describe this game, since it mixes several game mechanics. Simplifying a lot, I could say that it is a mixture of "child of light" with FTL. First of all, the game is not really a classic RPG, the game is divided into world, divided into rooms, so you must think carefully about which route to follow, similar to FTL. You can't go back and you can't freely explore the world, at least not in a single game. The combat system works in turns, in each turn, the order to playing character or enemy depends on the ability they use. The main mechanic is based on delaying the movements of the opponents, you can even delay them so much that they lose their turn. Plus the classic elemental damage mechanics, but with more appropriate names, such as heavy damage, or burst damage. If you have played "child of light" then you will have a very good idea of the combat mechanics of this game. The game is very well realized and I have not found cons, graphically it is colorful, you have good animations and a very successful pixel art design. Well made animated sequences, a story that fulfills quite well, in short, it has everything a good game should have. The only bad thing I can find is not a vanilla flavored game. This does not mean that it is bad, quite the opposite, but it may not be to everyone's liked. If you liked games like FTL or Child of light, you probably like this game, but if you are looking for a more classic RPG, you better look elsewhere.

Great game, but lack variety

It could have been the pefect scifi rogelike game. Art is cool, combat mechanics is awesome, characters are nice, enemies are badass I'd like to want to finish the game (i beat the first two characters) but every run is not different from others, the random side is absent making each run non singular ok the items drop will be different, ok the characters you'll get along your run are random but in the end everyrun is more or less the same. The worlds will be the same and the enemies as well. There is no really a character building aspect either, they just level So the result is absence of variety I am repeating myself : but the combat mechanics is absolutely great, each character has very different skills and is really unique It's a very enjoyable game, fully recomended and atmosphere is great

Turn based RPG crack

Really enjoyable turn based gameplay with battle mechanics that are addicting as f**k. Understandably it's not for people looking for a massive linear jrpg adventure like Final Fantasy. It doesn't matter though. It's has all those familiar elements, turn based combat, party interactions, leveling up etc. All distilled into a very replayable formula. The graphics are stellar and remind me of Octopath Traveler, but I like this game far more than OT. If you like turn based combat systems. Octopath Traveler, Darkest Dungeon, etc., then give this game a shot.
