Overall nicely desgined roguelite shmup

Monolith is a hybrid between shmup and a roguelite. Each run is relatively short and consists of clearing multiple levels with a boss in the end, each level in is a series of procedurally generated, screen-sized non-scrolling rooms. Game trailer should give the general idea of how the game plays. For a roguelite, Monolith is surprisingly well designed. Game doesn't feature too many pickups and upgrades, but what is there feels polished. You have some unlocks you can unlock between runs, and if you don't like them you can toggle them off! There's also no RNG punishment in this game. No harmful pickups or unwinnable situations. Of course, you're still a subject to some randomness, like what pikcups do you get, but it doesn't feel like those pickups make or break your run. Bossess aren't spongy and perfectly beatable with the starting weapon. Bullet patterns and rooms seem to be mostly well designed, they look nice and don't feel unfair. Rare thing you have to compromise on is either hoarding money for unlocks between runs or spending those money on consumables and upgrades during the run. My only complaint about this game would be seemingly small amount of unlocks, however taking in account how polished the game feels, it's probably for the best.

Awesome 16-bit bullethell roguelike

In the vein of BOI and EtG, Monolith is a twinstick bullethell roguelike with 16-bit graphics, a post-apocalyptic sci-fi aesthetic, and a terrific chiptune OST. The gameplay is what you would expect: enter an ever-changing dungeon, defeat baddies, find random upgrades, die, find or buy something new in the lobby, try again, die, get advice and... furniture?... from a smartalec cat, and did I mention "die"? What really sold me on this one was the atmosphere. I'm an old 16-bit gamer, so the graphics and soundtrack hit me right in the sweet spot. I also love the feeling of exploring the ruins of an old building in a city long past destroyed. But don't think for a second that the game is gloomy; a sense of humor pervades the experience, especially concerning the aforementioned cat. The controls are smooth and precise as can be, the gameplay loop is difficult but not punishing, and there is a real sense of progression: every few plays there is a new upgrade purchase in the lobby. What I really like is that while you spend money (or in this case "debris") to buy ammo, life, and other things in the maze, this does not detract from your score (total debris collected)... and your score is what allows you to buy things in the lobby. (What can I say? I enjoy that feature.) Not to mention the price is truly right; $8 American is not a lot to ask for this. This game is a lot of shooty-collecty-upgradey-explodey fun, and I cannot recommend it enough.

gba looking roguelike

it's a really sweet game for the price, all weapons are good(except for fireball), most runs are around 15 mins wich make this a good contender to pick up and play at any time, and it has great replayability with several things to unlock between new weapons, modes, ships and some other miscellanius stuff, greatly recommended.

2D Descent meets Downwell meets BOI...

Monolith follows the well-worn modern formula popularized by games like Binding of Issac, with the added spin of putting you in a ship exploring an abandoned structure brimming with advanced technology of dubious origins. At first glance, it felt a bit like Descent, if it had flattened with a ball-peen hammer and shoehorned into Downwell's graphics engine, marinaded in Enter the Gungeon's bullet-hell combat. That's a good thing, considering how much I love BOI-style roguelikes, Descent and Downwell. The result is a game that's a delightful mixture of fast, frenetic gameplay mixed with some light persistent elements. The difficulty curve is notably less steep than Gungeon or BOI and as a result, invites me to keep coming back to it again..and again...and again... And I'd be absolutely remiss to not mention ArcOfDream's awesome chiptune soundtrack for this game, which is simply fantastic.

a challenging roguelike bullethell

when a game is like 30-40 minutes long and you beat it like in 10 hour's , you know that is a serious matter of mastery the game, his mechanics , his enemies, your resources, the bosses. the atacks, when uses bombs, what blows to take and what to avoid, and once the game ended you probably going to be inside it again, make youtself a favor and buy it
