Star Control 3 is the last installment of the series. Taking a slightly different track that diverged from the Star Control 2 formula, it got excellent reviews though some of the hardcore Star Control fans weren't entirely thrilled by the innovations. Journalists, new fans of the series, and hardcore fans alike all agreed on one thing, though: this game's story is great.
So whether you're an old fan of the series, someone who was put off by a friend's dislike of the game, or someone who's never played the Star Control games at all, here's your chance: pick up the excellent final game in the Star Control series and make up your mind for yourself!
Fascinating story rich with unexpected plot twists, interesting characters, and memorable moments
Great diplomacy system that equips the player with many interesting options to solve problems
Each race has its own unique behavior, goals, and motives

To make any judgments on StarCon 3, the first and greatest rule is not to compare it to StarCon 2. Pretend you never played SC2, or pretend it is from an unrelated series that just happens to have all the same races and ships in it. The main draw in StarCon 3 for me was the colony building. This wasn't actually a hugely necessary part of the story, but I very much enjoyed it. The story, which some people hate and some like, isn't terrible, and hey, you get to add Dreadnaughts to your fleet, so don't complain so much. I missed the Yehat and the Shofixti would have been fun to have along, too, but you still get your diverse array of races and all those useless ships that you leave orbiting their homeworlds while you surround yourself with Ur-Quan and Chmmr (the Human Cruiser fares really well in this game, actually, especially after being upgraded). This game is fun, just not the same as StarCon 2.
This was my first introduction to the Star Control series, so I may be a little biased towards liking this game. I suppose I can see why most people would prefer Star Control 2, but this really is an awesome game in its own right. Even when I started playing it on newer operating systems that would cause the combat to get buggy, I love the strategy and diplomacy components. There are some frustrating moments in the story, but never so frustrating that it makes you want to stop playing. If you've played Star Control 2 already, don't come in expecting this to be just as good. But on its own, I think it deserves a solid 4 or 4.5.
Great idea. almost a logical step in the right direction for the game. I liked the combat sequence and I loved the ability to build ships and colonize planets. The alien interaction was boring and tired. The animation for conversation was just horrible. I liked the precursor storyline twist though. Not a bad game at the price but definitely not as good as it predecessors.
