Rushed and polished

Spore, the game that makes you create all kind of magical and freaky creatures that you can imagine from your sick mind. Really. Some of the creations from people are so sick, that your mouth is constancly opened while watching these abonimations. Of course, most of them no matter how freaky they look, they are adorable and cute. This is a game for creations mostly. So big part of the gameplay is creating and modifying your creature, buildings, vehicles and etc. There are 5 stages of evolution. 1. Micro. 2. Pack. 3. Tribe. 4. Civilization. 5. Space. For me personally the best stages are 1st and 2nd. Why? Because the game is made for them. It is not rushed, it is simple, funny and creative. Your and all other creatures just blen in the atmosphere. 3rd stage is maybe the most rushed one. Why? I've passed it within an hour as far as I remember. Without destroying a single tribe from the others. All you need to do is pet maximum some wild creatures and they will give you eggs-food. With high food siply you can do whatever you want. The easiest way is to give food to other tribes and they won't attack you. Then it is easy to make them friends and aly. 4th stage is when things really started to be broken. The whole game conception is so much different of what you have seen on previous stages, that you will feel that you don't play the same game again. You are trown in a lot of creating stuff for your civilization that you will spend a lot of time there, unless you make it fast and simple. 5th stage is where everything is wrong. But the conception is good enough. But badly done. So we can see when the developers had their time of programming and etc. 1st and 2nd stage they were in the beginning and they had time so everything is awesome, 3rd stage is like - ok we need to go fast. 4th and 5th stage they saw they don't have much time and started to rush things up. So overall it is between 3,5 Stars, so 4 to summarize. Funny and creative game to play. Thank you

Brilliant Creature Creator, Bad Game

Spore is one of those games that I love to hate. The game is split into five phases with very different pros and cons. The Cell Phase is the most polished phase, but it's short and has very little content so it's little more than a minigame. The Creature, Tribal, and Civilization phases all suffer from having a lack of depth and being overly simplistic despite their complicated veneer. Tribal and Civilization are particularly frustrating, and not in a good way. The Spacefaring phase is the meat of the game, but it's tedious grind-work to advance, build colonies, trade, and defend. Your ship is the only one that actually does anything, which can get extremely annoying once you have more than a handful of colonies or if you want to explore the distant reaches of the galaxy. This makes large empires completely unmanageable. Galactic Adventures adds adventures to the mix, so there's something more to do now, but you're still left with the problem that every long-term goal is tedious. One of my biggest complaints with this game is how it punishes creativity. It gives you an absolutely breathtaking creature editor, then doesn't actually allow similar or duplicate creature parts to stack. This means a creature with 4 legs is just as fast as a creature with 2 legs... but it costs you twice as much of your evolution budget. This eviscerates a lot of the creativity since there is usually a "best" option for the kind of creature you want to create, and no reason to use anything else. With all that said, I still can't help but enjoy the lovely editors of the game. Making spaceships, tanks, factories, and especially creatures is still amazing. It was enough to draw me back in spite of the foul taste still lingering in my mouth from years ago. There was something brilliant there, but the game built around it stinks. If you think the creature editor is really cool and are willing to put up with a frankly bad game to play with it, then you might love to hate Spore like I do.

Just for the Galactic Adventures.

I can only recommend this because it includes Galactic Adventures & it is definitely a must have when it's on sale. The reason is, Galactic Adventures is the only thing that keeps this game from becoming boring, Galactic Adventures gives you weapons & abilities to create scenarios, missions & mini games which keeps your game from becoming dull. Which it definitely will be when you reach the Space Age. If anything, Spore gets boring when you reach Tribal Age. I should explain, This game selling point is that you create & evolve your creatures any way you wanted to. But in Tribal & Civilization age, the game turns into a simplistic RTS where you can no longer evolve your creatures. But instead, you control their societal evolution which only shows any signs of effects in the Space age, and in Space age, the game became an rpg, whereby the game keeps making you do the same old stuff over & over again which makes the game stops being fun to a lot of people (me included). Galactic Adventures help making Space age better, but to me, it feels like "better than nothing" than an actual improvement. If you've heard people comparing Spore to No Mans Sky but better, believe them! But hey, at least you could design buildings, vehicles & play dress up on your creatures, so there's that. But if your creature has some sort of ultimate badass abilities from the Creature age? Yeahh, you wouldn't get to use any of that... Unless you have Galactic Adventures, then it matters! Not by much, but at least you get to play with your creatures again. Oh, I forgot to mention, you might have to make an account at Spore homepage so you could upload or download creations on their servers.

Excellent game, GOG Galaxy issues...

I've spent many hours creating on Spore and the modelling on it played a part in my pursuit of CADD later in life. I find myself coming back to it occasionally and decided to get it on sale here to avoid Origin. However, GOG seems to be bent on making people use the Galaxy app more and more with games. This, I believe, is causing issues with my ability to play Galactic Adventures on Spore. It seems to work rarely, and I have no trouble logging into EA Spore servers or doing any other online function like sharing... BUT, GA is inaccessible with the icons/buttons to play and create grayed out 90% of the time. Fortunately, there is still tons to do, but GA is arguably one of the coolest features of the game. The game would get 5 stars, but the limitation from GOG Galaxy puts it to a very gracious 3. The whole point of GOG for me is to get away from DRM garbage. Luckily, I wait for sales so the investment (or loss) is not significant should I discover strings attached. I recommend doing the same.

So thankful GOG got this

So here on the eve of Thanksgiving, I'm profoundly grateful that not only has GOG dumped the draconian DRM, but that they are committed to keeping the server and Sporepedia going [as it's a critical part of this game with over 10 years of user creations for this game]. This is fun little game, not perfect, but a pioneer trying something new. It's one of the first games to encourage user created content extensively, and try to open up a game as something for an entire community to contribute to, not just something devs drop on their fans. The game play is a bit like a sampler platter: it consists of several stages with their own mechanics and objectives as you progress from a tiny single cell to a vast space traveling civilization with user generated adventures through space. Think of it as the precursor to No Man's Sky, only on a bigger scale without specializing in a single type of dedicated game play.
