Description

Includes Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell®: Mission Pack with three additional missions: the original Kola Cell mission, Vselka Infiltration, and Vselka Submarine.

The player takes on the role of Sam Fisher, an operative for the National Security Agency's sub agency, the Third Echelon. The Third Echelon consists of many Splinter Cells. It has the support and resources of the major U.S. intelligence agencies, but will never be recognised by the U.S. government. If any cell of Third Echelon is captured or compromised the government will disavow any knowledge of its existence and the remaining members will vanish.

Fisher is inducted into the Third Echelon with an important first mission. Two CIA agents have disappeared in T'Bilisi, Georgia after investigating communications blackouts in the area. Fisher will uncover more than a couple of corpses when he infiltrates the Georgian government and unveils a threat that will have devastating consequences for the American people.

Splinter Cell is a stealth-oriented action game set in a Tom Clancy-inspired landscape. All kinds of cool high-tech gadgets are at your disposal to help you neutralise terrorist threats. Night vision, thermal vision, EM sensors, sticky cams, and other whiz-bang tech toys help you spot the bad guys, and your broad array of weapons--lethal and not--include suppressed pistols and assault rifles, sticky shock bombs, Ring-Airfoil Projectiles, and the most lethal weapon of all: Sam Fisher himself. Climb, mantle, and sneak your way through a game that won E3 2002’s “Best Action/Adventure Game” award as well as the Game Developer’s Choice Award for Excellent in Writing. With a tightly-written plot, unbeatable mechanics, and an iconic character, it’s no wonder this is the start of a long--and excellent--series.

Classic stealth action with issues

I remember being amazed at not just the technical advances in light & shadow but how they're incorporated into the gameplay. I'd replay the same section again and again because of the various ways I could complete it. Do I lure the guy out? Do I jump above him into the darkness and wedge myself between the walls? Do i just shoot him in the face? I even remember just marvelling at how good the thermal vision graphics were. Today it's a lot easier to see the issues. There are games with way more freedom than this today. There IS freedom there, but more how you deal with moment to moment enemy encounters and so on, not really in the way missions pan out). The graphics have dated, although the importance of light & shadows on gameplay, the usage of the different vision modes and slower pace still work well. The shadows have that, now retro, early, sharp 'pitch black' look, so that they feel more like physical objects than actual shadows, but it adds to the charm. There are lots of linear and scripted sections that, while they serve the story in the sense that they make you feel that you are slipping between seismic events and getting deeper into the thick of things, they conflict with the desire for free-form stealth gameplay. There's also a limitation on that 'freedom', especially in areas that force combat upon you, or send you down a series of specific paths. The immersion breaks from time to time, however for an 18 year old (cries) game, I think you can forgive some of it's flaws. The story is well told and acted. It's a bit convoluted, but the main thing is you really feel engaged with the urgency of the missions thanks to the back and forth between the voice-in-your-ear. The series climaxed with SC3, and I'd say for story and immersion factor (as well as it being a landmark game), this is the next best one in the series.

Excellent

A classic in the stealth genre but i do think the base keybinds kinda suck and you have to fiddle with the settings for 1080p but ive come to accept that by now for these older games definitely pick it up if you have the chance

Great story, great stealth-based game.

An excellent stealth-based game with an intriguing story. Graphics, sound, music, and voice acting are all top-notch. There is somewhat of a learning curve at the beginning, but once you learn what the game expects of you, you will be on your way to become a top agent in one of the best stealth games of all time. The next two sequels are even better. As much as I enjoyed the Medieval elements of the Thief series, I also enjoyed this modern take on the stealth genre.

Fun stealth game that has aged well.

AI is smart enough, growing more difficult as the story progresses, and you have a good amount of moves and tools at your disposal. I only really have two gripes: 1) a couple segments of the game are guns-blazing, action-centric which doesn't play well with stealth mechanics. During those segments you can be sitting still for 10 seconds straight and still have a good chance of missing unless you're scoped in with FN2000. 2) the dlc/expansion missions must be manually selected in order to play. While they continue to increase the challenge and make use of mechanics barely explored in the main game, I can't help but feel that there is a drop in quality in them compared to the main story. There are no debriefings after the 3 missions, just a generic "Mission complete" image. Enemies would often get suck in silly places or there'd be places you think you can interact with, only to clip through them.
