The colony ship, Maximus, was on a routine voyage filled to the brim with colonist. This quickly changed when an unexpected gravitational entity appeared. The field quickly swallowed the Maximus. Invaders poured into the Maximus, feeding on the helpless colonists. Hope is not lost though, as there is one soldier on board that is about to take the fight to the invaders.
Grab your energy drinks because this will take some time, like 50 plus hours as you hack-and-slash your way through 45 diverse levels to the escape pods, saving as many colonists along the way.
It works on modern hardware without fiddling with anything. But should you play it? No. Even if you're aching for a classic hack and slash, make sure you've exhaused literally any other option before you even think about trying this. This game is tedium incarnate.
The only way you will be able to get any enjoyment out of this whatsoever is if you bring a really big dose of nostalgia into the play. And even then it's probably going to crumble before your eyes.
It's not a bad game but it doesn't do anything to stand out from all the other ARPGS out there, I've seen the word "unenthusiastic" used quite a bit to describe the game and I would agree with that. There is such a lack of gameplay mechanics and details that you wonder why the developers made this a 20 hour game, even the NPCs don't seem to care that much about what is happening. If you are desperate for an ARPG or just want something to play while you listen to podcasts then i recommend you get this when its on sale. Below are some other things I thought worth noting
- Health pickups are rare and one health potion costs $100 so the early game is a bit of a slog with running back to base to get healed until you can afford to buy potions while also having to repair gear.
- You fight the same enemies over and over, they just change the name and colour of them. Don't know why these alien enemies had names like "Degenerate" and " Satanic Spawn" either.
- You don't have skills or a skill tree, you have "Hi Tech" items which are usable items based on you knowledge stat that have effects like freezing enemies or healing. The most useful ones are the healing and teleporting tech, the rest are pretty meh honestly.
Sounds cool in concept, yeah? I played this on Steam ages ago because I thought a hack'n'slash in the sci-fi environment would be fun. All I remember of this game is how utterly boring it was. Let's bask in this wonderful snippet from the *official* game description:
>> Grab your energy drinks because this will take some time, **like 50 plus hours** as you hack-and-slash your way through 45 diverse levels to the escape pods, saving as many colonists along the way.
Like 50 hours?! Like wow, man. That's like, forever. With a description like that, it seems they got so bored of their own game, they couldn't write anything catchy about it. They resorted to warning you about how prolonged the misery will be, and attempted to spin it as "long game hours equals good game".
It can't lean on age as an excuse for its poor design, because it came out *after* other games of higher quality. The weapons feel as though they started out copying the usual fantasy RPG stuff, then suddenly switched over to the sci-fi theme; but they forgot, or didn't bother, to remove the fantasy weapons. Axe, Slingshot, Xbow, Laser Rifle... Maybe they ran out of sci-fi weapon ideas and had to pad it out. Like, who knows?
tl;dr : stay away even if discounted
