Big disappointment

I have this game on Steam and the gameplay is just uneasy/unsettling at times. The characters in it behave like uptight Sims who will at times just forget to do their jobs if you don't cater to their every need, and the local flora and fauna can be a total bitch to deal with. At one point there was some spacerat infestation which was constantly getting in my way and making the space colonists unhappy and I could not for the life of me figure out how to get rid of the beasts. Then my colonists stopped doing their jobs, we ran out of power and oxygen and food and everything died and I uninstalled the game from frustration because nowhere was there any indication of how this all went wrong. It's limited, it's frustrating, and really not the kind of game I would recommend anyone playing. There are better games, like Startopia.

Mediocre Sim

This seems like one of those games that leaned on its graphics when it was released. There's no real depth to the simulation or its economy. The colonists have "personalities" to give them some individuality, but the attempts at humor fall flat and the individuality is repetitive. The personnel management aspect especially falls flat with the clumsy controls.

You're so Gangsta!

Better get ready to deal with this phrase, it's gonna burn into your brain. From the creators of stronghold ( which I have believed until now they made only games about medieval knights and raging old man with an helmet shaped like a wolf) comes Space colony (HD), which is a strategic managerial space sim simulator, with micro-management being its main focus point. So, speaking about the assigning a value of the game, I had tremendous doubts about giving it 4 or 3 stars: in the end I've settled for a 3.5 stars ( rounding it, 4 stars). The reason is that game has style, and doesn't matter how much you would hate it: it's undeniable. Every single aspect of this game is memorable: graphics, music and even settings ( clichè as they are). This does not mean the game is flawless: far from it, actually. Gameplay wise, the micromanagement, sometimes, reaches absurd levels, while the graphics ( although this should be an ''HD'' edition) make it difficult to click on things, especially when you are in a hurry. Also, i'll forgo going over some mission, which called them difficult is an euphemism. Besides that, the game can be really entertaining when it wants to: the character are stereotypes but mostly funny ones, gameplay sometimes is both enjoyable and challenging just at the right point... and the rest of the game is clearly full of funky style all around. So, worth? mmmm yes! Even if you don't like this kind of games, it's enough casual to hook you for a couple of days, and its style will keep you playing to, eventually, grown of this game... even if you are being attacked from an infinite numbers of spitting acid worms while your colonists are discussing why they hate each other <3

A nice game, if it wasn't broken.

The idea and structure of the game is solid and the basic premise is fun. However, horrible AI mixed with annoying voices and cumbersome UI makes this game horribly outdated and feels broken, although it most likely works as intended. I was having moderate fun until mission 8 "Heat!"; The game suddenly demands the player to do something that is poorly explained and piles on a lot of annoying features at once. I just gave up after a few retries, because I felt like I was wasting my time and energy, something that's opposite of what a game should feel like. You might be able to push through, but I sure wasn't able. There are better games in both the base building and simulation genres that make this unfinished gem obsolete.

What YAGOG says... plus my 2-cents

YAGOG's detailed review is "spot on" as the Brits say. He summarizes gameplay mechanics well and the campaign's mission-ramping issue, too. And if you read YAGOG's review closely, you will also get the sense that for MOST of the game, even at his astute sensibilities, THIS GAME IS A BLAST. If the end-game was a bit less off-the-charts in terms of spiraling entropy-building "plate-spinning" craziness, this would be near the top of my all-time favorite games. It is not just lots of detail-laden micro-mechanics to keep you jumping for the sake of complexity. The animations and "micro-mechanics" of the gameplay ooze character and context. This game -- its characters and story -- come alive in a fun way that many games similar to it do not. Given that this is the updated HD version, and offered in a bundle with the two best Stronghold games all in updated HD DRM-free format, I can only recommend that you pick this one up by itself or in the great bundle. See for yourself what a FUNNY, FUN, hybrid (city builder, TD, RPG, etc.) game classic Space Colony truly is... a real and deservedly classic gem.
