Four factions are locked in an epic conflict. Arleon, knights of old battling each other for dominance. Rana, ancient tribes fighting for survival in the swamp. I've played through one of the campaigns in the game and I must say I'm pretty impressed. It captures the old HOMM formula well but adds some new features that in my mind make the game better those old games. The new research buildings and the command point requirements for stack size make for more strategic play. Also, small things in the battles like zones of control, counterstrikes and attacks of opportunity are welcome additions as it the idea of height buffs. All in all, a great experience and I look forward to playing this one for years to come in skirmish, campaign and multiplayer mode.
I have never palyed any Heroes of Might & Magic games - which I am told is the same "kind" of game as Songs of Conquest - in the same way that Final Fantasy 7 is the same "kind" of game as Persona 4.
That said, this game is gorgeous. There are people who complain about the graphics being "dated" ... what drugs are these people taking because I want some. The pixel art in this game is SO good.
The combat is like Fire Emblem except on smaller maps that are hex grids and there are spells. The overworld is like Civ5 except much simpler and there isn't any micromanaging of the cities. Every city you expand to or capture is an objective improvement.
The 4 different faction all play very differently - EXTREMELY differently - to the point where it almost feels like there are 4 different games to be played depending on the faction you choose.
The maps are good, the music is GREAT, the modding community is moderately active and new maps are not hard to find, the AI is reasonably competent for practicing, and I haven't ever had a single problem in multi-player.
This is 5-star game (4-star MINIMUM) especially when you consider the price tag and play time. Not only that, but I come back to this game every 6 months or so and there is always more content that is more polished than the last time I played.
Seriously, who could even think this is a bad game?
Everything that HoMM was but better in every way. Some people have complained about the unit cap, but I see it as an improvement. While it was funny amassing a giant horde of skeletons and recking everyone else, it wasn't fair, and a lot of the time it wasn't fun just sitting in Necropolis and advancing the turns. The Unit caps force players to be more strategic which, for me, makes the game more fun. New units every day instead of every week make the game more faced passed and enjoyable. Songs of Conquest is a worthy successor to HoMM3 and Improves upon it in every way, from gameplay to the fantastic bit graphics.
