STORY

What would you do if your daughter never came home but you could track her down?

It’s not the first time she ran away. But you’re uneasy … this time feels so different. Long ago, you swore never to return here. And now, she has dragged you back. Your search leads deep into ancient Moravian forests and reveals secrets that should have stayed buried.

While your survival skills and quick wits might advance your search, malevolent forces rise up against you. There are nightmares you can’t fight and win. Some of them … could be yours.

Your character is Daniel, Stela’s father, who is forced by events to return to a place, he swore never to return. In the forest, he will encounter peculiar people who will help him understand the true reason why Stela keeps running away. Someday You’ll Return deals with intimate concepts of fatherhood, fears, lies, and refusal to accept one’s past. While the story contains strong horror elements it’s not always the most obvious monsters which are the most frightening.

The story itself spans over 13+ hours, depending on your playstyle.

SETTING

Someday You’ll Return takes place in the beautiful scenic areas of the Czech Republic. While they are not exact duplicates, we desired to capture the atmosphere of Bohemian nature. There are well-known landmarks placed within the world, which you can discover and which we've personally visited many times in our lives. You can even grab your backpack and hike there.

The referenced locations and mythos in the game are ancient. Some of the tales mentioned in Someday You’ll Return date back to the 9th century.

Better than expected

I'm writing this review mostly because I want to ballance the unfair review by Karca.K, who is obviously biased because he says he was banned from a website for criticizing this game. I guess the real reason was different (like trolling, insulting others etc.) and he is now just whining here. My opinions are based on a few months old Steam version, the one at GOG can be patched etc. I was initially ignoring this game because it looked like another walking simulator mixed with jumpscare horror, but after watching gameplay videos on YouTube, I decided to give this one a try and I was positively surprised. It definitely has elements of walking simulator, actually it could be called tourism simulator, as some of the locations are based on real places and you will walk on pedestrian paths. For enjoying this game, it definitely helps if you are into hiking, depth dwelling or mountain climbing. But the walking is mixed with adventure features like picking and using items and even woodcraft. There are jumpscares but not as many as in most FPS horror games, the atmosphere is rather tense than purely scary. I really like the environment, most locations are beautiful and looking very realistic, things and buildings are not sterile but rusty and used. It's not a true that "a gifted IT student can create such countryside in a free 3D engine" as Karca.K says, it had to take a lot of work to do all of this. The story is not exceptional but not bad and quite adult for a computer game. The game even has multiple endings. What I dislike is the amount of climbing. Climbing works as a logical sub-game and it's fun for some time but later climbs are overly long which makes them rather boring. Some people might have problem with orientation in caves but if you ever played some old dungeon RPGs, this is probably better. Overall, not a game for absolutely everyone but definitely worth these 9 USD/EUR in Halloween Sale for most. Check YouTube for gameplays if you're not sure.

Good game

It is really great game. It not my favourite genre, but because I live in Chriby I wanted to try it. I enjoyed it most of the time. Good screen is a must for this game. My struggle early on was caused by using a common office monitor. When I switch to the large TV set in darkened room it makes all the difference. No problem with orientation after that. I would prefer much more "woods" part and much less "horror" part, but it is my own preference only. I understand the dislike for the Daniel many player feels, but that is the irremovable part of the story. And the story is great, although it needs some life experience to truly feel it.

The game start wasn't so great at start but with patches getting better and better. Is this the best game you can play? No. Is it something fresh? I think yes! Give it a try and you will see nice story telling, great locations and some fresh gameplay elements. And don't mind the one star reviews, haters gonna hate :) If you like thrillers and horrors - this one is 5 star, if you are normal player 4 star it is. :)

A deep and intense forest experience

I've played a lot indie adventures, survival horror and walking simulators but this one is really special and enjoyable. It has 12 chapters and 15h of playtime (depending on how much time you spend on exploring and hunting for collectables). You have a nice and realistic forest setting with hiking trails, sightseeing places and so on and later explore a lot of bunkers and caves, too. As it's a psychological game the reality alters during the game and becomes more surreal. The story is quite complex and told over multiple ways. There are NPCs, documents, voice memories and a diary that reveals it's pages over time. The last chapters feel a bit too long and steamy and repeat places and textures too often. But overall it's a great journey and for tgis price and the fact that it's built by two people, it's simply a masterpiece.

Recommend for all horror fans

I played Someday You'll Return on Steam and have to say it is an interesting game. It explores motives I haven't seen explored in a videogame yet and while it makes you feel uncomfortable at times, it all does make sense in the end. A very impactful end btw. The game plays like a standard walk/talk game with elements of the old adventure games like puzzles and crafting. It also looks quite beautiful, especially when exploring the semi open-world forest areas of the game. I simply had a blast and recommend all horror fans to give it a try.
