Soldiers: Heroes of World War II drops you into the heart of the most intense WWII combat action. Take control of the most elite American, British, German, or Russian forces ever to impact on the war-zone. Up against overwhelming odds, you must complete your missions incorporating stealth, guile, speed, and aggression.
Mission objectives include blowing up railway tracks, kidnapping enemy officers, and destroying convoys. Be warned that much of this activity will take place behind enemy lines!
Use the fully interactive environment, tools, and equipment around you to complete your objective, the way you want to complete it. Maximize the effectiveness of your squad by assigning tasks relevant to their individual skills. As long as you keep your men alive, you can do whatever it takes to secure victory, nothing is pre-set.
If flying bullets and the smell of gunpowder in the morning are what you like the most, then this game will feel like home to you. Take the lead and crush your enemies. Take no prisoners! Victory is ours!

Played this non stop for the whole year of its release. The original men of war despite it being made by the same people, this combines men of war with something like commandos. Its possible to do so much with one man or one tank or you can go for a broad attack and trust the AI (not recommended haha). But best play to play this is online 2v2 or 3v3 all in tanks in direct control or one of the many capture the hill or area control missions or play the campaign with a mate. "at least I will get some rest in hospital"
This game really gets it right. Various operations from russian, german, british/american forces -- many of which allow you to cultivate troops and equipment from one level to the next. Speeding up and slowing down time to issue orders and watch them be carried out keeps tension high (you can pause to look around but orders can only be issued during flow of time) -- and while you can place your units and vehicles around and give them orders and they'll behave reasonably, the game really shines in that you can direct control any unit you light on -- Commanding tanks personally is a joy, firing multiple machineguns and picking AP or HE shells to deal with various threats. You can repair and steal enemy tanks and crew them with your troops, and you can hijack all manner of equipment! I could go on and on, but I played through this game at least twice, and will always treasure it. The voice acting and historical backstory are likewise cool.
This game deserves your time and attention!
The other reviews clearly outline the experience offered by the game itself. I'll only add that the graphics are very good for an RTS, and easily run on a modern (less expensive) computer.
But the real reason I'm writing this review is to introduce you to the magic of Co-op play in the game. Since you start your missions with limited men, it may seem unusual that in most cases playing the campaign Co-op affords you few if any additional men. Where the game shines in this mode are the little buttons that light up in the upper right hand corner of the screen.
You can give control of your boys over to your co-commander. This had served us well on one of our missions: our tanks needed some preparation before they were battle-ready. We had one soldier on a road which was going to be visited by enemy scouts in jeeps. I foisted my half of a tank crew onto my partner and got the soldier in return. He took care of the tank prep, and I successfully intercepted the jeeps. Then, my partner in war finished outfitting the tanks and gave me control of one!
We laid an ambush for the oncoming hostile armor column that obliterated them. This mission had been planned out by both of us in advance, and we delegated ourselves to different tasks to better support each other. This game offers a rare Co-Op experience in addition to its other rare qualities.
I urge you to to put the adage "Two Heads Are Better Than One" to practice!
This game is by far the best iteration of Commando's style games in 3D. This was done by the same guys who did Men of War (another great game, but not as good imo) 3 years before Men of War. Whereas men of war focuses more on large scale battles, this game focuses more on stealthy 3 man operations in which you are outnumbered and outgunned and must rely on your wits and stealthy solutions to survive. sound familiar? If you enjoyed Commandos 2, buy this game.
This game holds up extremely well 8 years after it came out. The interface while it takes a bit to get used to is a breeze to work with. No more switching between equally mystifying (but admittedly beautiful) isometric views in hopes of peering around corners. This game comes with a fully swivvleable camera with panning and zoom. Allowing you to fully assess each situation before you act. One great feature first introduced to this game is the ability to take direct control of your men and play through certain sticky situations like an action game, using the keyboard to move your character and the mouse to aim. Don't rely on this too much though, one slipup and you will alert entire squads of possibly armor supported Germans, more or less dooming your squad. One thing that amazes me is how well the graphics and sound hold up today. Whoever did the textures on this game did a damn good job. While it certainly looks dated, it never looks ugly, it's aged quite well, even if its not as pretty as Commandos 2.
Still not convinced. The game has a ton of content. 3 full campaigns and a mission editor. Do not miss out on this game. It's essential for all Real Time Tactics fans.
