Objective:
Use all means necessary to find and secure four stolen nuclear warheads. Track and stop the terrorist organization responsible for the theft before they can carry out their thermonuclear holocaust. Dispatch as many terrorists, skinheads and enemy soldiers as necessary to complete your mission. Failure is not an option.
Parameters:
10 covert missions take you through the political hot spots of 5 different continents during 26 levels of play. Your arsenal includes ultra-realistic real-world weapons. Enemies are numerous, and a good mercenary knows that wits and intelligence are just as important as guns and ammo.
It was hilarious to play this title in the cyber cafe of the neighborhood, next to my cousin, blowing up pieces that were simply bad for us!
It was our first time, being able to destroy like a doll the bad guys until leaving the skull, the guts and a bloody mass ...
I remember it was pure SPF action and adrenaline butt
The game has good gunplay in it and the main character is a badass, but the game gets repetitive fast! Levels are pretty basic, constantly run down some hallways, shoot badguys that lay around every other corner, and then a small bit of platforming sometimes.
The AI is mostly braindead and will miss you even when standing right next to you, then you get the odd one that will have pinpoint accuracy with a powerful weapon. Nothing that will stop you longterm though as on normal mode it is very easy most of the time.
The game lets you pick your weapon loadouts with money earned from missions completed before starting new missions which i really like, it adds a little more variety to how you wana play the game. You can pick between pistols, shotguns, sniper and machine guns etc, and you unlock more as you progress through the game.
One of the big reasons why i have lowered the score down is due to the numerous bugs in the game. Sometimes i have been stuck or sucked into objects and doors with no hope of getting unstuck. Having to reload a save many times, sometimes losing quite abit of progress which is frustrating! I even had a problem where one of my saves started crashing every time i tried to load it up, meaning i had to load an earlier save file so i could finally continue with the game.
That alone is a good reason not to bother wasting my time going back for a second playthrough, these things should of been fixed when it was re-released. If it were not for these problems, i would of probably given it a 3/5 as its middle of the pack really for FPS games of that time, it's not terrible but also not that good.
Would advise buy on sale only.
Pros:
Realistic combat mechanics: The game’s use of the Ghoul damage model allows for highly detailed and varied enemy reactions to damage, which adds a layer of realism to the combat.
Challenging gameplay: Fans of old-school shooters will appreciate the fast-paced action, with a variety of weapons and tactical challenges throughout.
Story-driven missions: The game features a compelling narrative for a shooter, with a mercenary protagonist and a globe-trotting mission structure that keeps things interesting.
Nostalgic appeal: For players who enjoyed the game in the early 2000s, it’s a trip down memory lane, now made accessible via GOG with modern system compatibility.
Cons:
Outdated graphics: Despite being optimized for newer systems, the game’s graphics look dated, which might be a turn-off for players used to modern visuals.
Repetitive level design: Some missions feel repetitive, with linear paths and limited variety in environments.
Dated controls: The control scheme and movement can feel clunky compared to contemporary shooters, requiring some adjustment.
Graphic violence: The level of gore and violence may be excessive for some players, and while it's a key feature of the game, it could be off-putting for those not used to such explicit content.
Conclusion:
Soldier of Fortune is a nostalgic, action-packed shooter with innovative mechanics for its time. However, players unfamiliar with classic shooters might find its dated design and graphic violence less appealing. For fans of retro FPS games, it’s a solid pick with a unique, gritty charm.
Having not played it in the past Soldier of Fortune was a decent 2000s era shooter. A bit too easy, a bit too long, but the gore system makes it a bit more fun. Good way to spend a lazy Sunday
So I tried to install the game. That worked. I tried to play it and it only grayed out the play button several attempts. I tried to repair the file, but it always ends up getting stuck at 93%. The game really good fun to try, but unfortunely on my end (I have windows 10), no dice.
