Beta Testing

What I remember most about this game is... one night a buddy of mine called and said "hey do you have any plans for tonight?" Next thing I know is we're driving about 1.5 hours to Madison (or close to it) and show up for a beta testing at Raven's offices. They give us a rundown on the gameplay, control's, modes, so forth and so on. Next thing I know we are going into the different developers offices and they setup a multiplayer match. I fell in love with the head shots right away. Next thing I know it's 8am and I realize there is no way i'll be able to make it to work since I've been up all night and am already late. It was well worth it. Several months later I receive a copy of the game in the mail and proceed to be late for work a few more days.

Just finished it, great game!

Picked this up on sale as I never got to play it when I was younger. Awesome game! At first I was underwhelmed by the voilence / gore, but you soon realize that when you get more powerful guns, the violence increases! I also think the game gets better the more you play. My fav levels were the tokyo city one and the castle one. ***FOR ANYONE HAVING PROBLEMS ON WINDOWS 10*** I am on the latest Windows 10. To get the game working, install Sofplus patch. Then copy the the SoF.exe from game directory to desktop, rename it to SoF_.exe, copy back to game directory and start game with this new exe. The game will now open and run. This is all you need to do! Runs perfect with the patch, even in 1440p.

It works !

Surprisingly got the game running pretty easily. SOF is one of the classic, truly an underrated Gem of the FPS genre. So I'm running on Windows 10 and rather modern hardware too. All I have to do is 1) Install the game 2) Install the patch 3) Go to the SOF Plus site download additional patch and fixes. ( http://sof1.megalag.org/sofplus/ ) 4) Follow the instructions, download the one that's for GOG and the one called Client instead of Server. 5) Extract all the files to your SOF folder. 6) Click on sofplus-clien-patch.cmd ( there are two one is .cfg another is a .cmd ) 7) After that in your SOF folder, you will find a Zip. file mine was called " sofplus-client-20140531-kb4571756 " 8) Copy all the files into your SOF folder and Overwrite when prompt. Start the game. I'm gaming on 1440p @ 144hz, it even have V-SYNC ON by itself so my FPS doesn't go insane.

A blast from the past - FINALLY ON GOG!

One of the absolute best FPS games you could get your hands on. Ahead of its time when it came to realism, the GHOUL engine (which is basically a heavily worked id Tech 2 engine - aka the Quake II engine) was quite a sight to behold. Being able to blow someone's head clean off with a Desert Eagle .50 at point blank range was not only impressive, but incredibly gruesome. The idea behind it was to actually showcase the raw power of these weapons, and it still holds up the test of time. The game also plays basically like an '80s action movie, which adds to the enjoyment of it; it's not to be taken too seriously. So if you're a JCVD/Seagal/Schwarzenegger fan, you'll feel right at home with this game, and you might find yourrself replaying it! The game still has an avid fan community, one that I'm sure will receive with open arms all newcomers who are new to the SOF franchise. Thank you GOG for finally including this gem in your library!

A classic, years ahead of its time

Soldier of Fortune is one of very few games from its era that aged well. Combat is still visceral, missions never drag on too long, and levels flow well. This game wisely disregarded the mind-numbing mazes and switch/key scavenger hunts of Doom and Unreal. Thank god, for that. The mechanics are suprisingly deep for a 22-year-old shooter. Seven years before Modern Warfare, this game perfected the modern-military FPS genre. It was one of the first games with bindable items and customizable loadouts. The full-body dismemberment was so impressive, it's essentially the exact same system you see in RDR 2. Enemies dynamically react to damage, covering gunshots (or bloody stumps). You can even try to play non-lethal and shoot weapons out of enemies' hands to get them to surrender. Though the weapons are so fun, you will probably blast everything instead. But shoot too many civilians, and it's mission over. It's old, so of course it has the standard old-school problems, too. You need to download a widescreen patch, ladders are annoying, sound effects might cut off, and running this over 60 frames might break the physics. For those too young to remember, there was indeed a time when Raven Software was innovative, Activision cared about games, and the FPS genre was king. Boss fights?, Well, they sucked then just as much as they suck in 2022.
