Battle the brutal wilderness of Siberia and fight to survive the intensity of snow-covered mountains, lush forests and secret bases hidden deep in the mountainside.
For some reason or other I've wound up playing every game in this franchise to at least some degree, and this is probably the best one of the series. Essentially it's a more shooter, but no less cerebral, "Hitman." The plot's goofy at best, something about Siberia, and the main character is little more than a handy blank, but if you delight in figuring the PRECISE way to sneak past or kill some mooks to perform an objective, this'll fit the bill.
The game is overall decent. It has few misses here, and there but overall product is solid. Here are my few bits on the game.
+ Redesigned Sniping from Ghost Warrior 3
The new sniping is much more realistic to what we would have in real world.
+ AI looks up
This is big difference vs older GW3 where AI would just sit in same spot where you can't shoot them. Makes this little bit more enjoyable.
- Unrealistic AI
AI only pretends it doesn't see you... it knows where the player is right away.
so you missed your shot... well the AI knows where it came from, and is sending a mortar fire on your exact bush location, they know where, and how to hide away from your line of sight...
- No bleeding
so you shot someones ass, they should bleed out don't they? Well not in GW... no bleed out, no matter if you pump couple .300's in them.
- Loadouts are odd
I mean if you are some cool assassin sniper or something... why the hell would you pick up Vortex's Viper scope. You would be using US-Optics, Svarowski, Nightforce etc... There seems to be a lot of cheap rifles, scopes, and few higher end ones that aren't that great.... Not sure if devs only picked rifles that looked cool, but didn't do any research on them, or shot them. I can't stress how it hurts when u see STRUM-Precision (aka. Ruger Precision) for couple 100's k | maybe if those are some syberian currency i'd buy that price ranges. Sure top flight items may not look pretty but they work. The game supposed to be in the future - I assumed were going to see more 6 or 6.5 creedmoore.
- Buggy terrain
Well you will find yourself quite often stuck on polygons while trying to slowly move between locations, be it stairs, some garbage, a small rock... you'll have to either jump or sprint... to pass it by
- Your shots are not that precise... the system actually helps you and narrows down your error to help you make headshots - while otherwise you'd miss.
!!! This game has EAC - EasyAntiCheat Spyware-Bloatware !!!
The graphics are great. But what makes the game so good is the level design. You are not forced to one linear path, there are always other ways to get to the targets. The levels are huge. I often, after finishing a region in a level, discovered two or MANY more alternate paths I could have sneaked into a target area. You can play sneaky sniper heaven. The enemies are placed well, so keep your eyes on your back where an enemy sniper might be waiting for you. I did not change the controls, they are fine. Usually I don't like checkpoint save style, but they are OK here. It saves often enough. The checkpoint triggers are not just areas, they are mission-specific progress too (i.e. picked up an item, killed main target etc). Save-game location: %Userprofile%\Saved Games\Sniper Ghost Warrior Contracts, so you can make extra saves manually by keeping copies.
Easy Anti Cheat was not a thing any more when I finished the first play-through a few hours ago, it is gone.
Bug 1: You can get stuck on ledges, happens quite often. If waiting for 20 seconds does not unstuck you switch weapons. Not good, but I would have loved to known that "weapon switching" trick sooner, would have prevented a few "load last checkpoint".
Bug 2 (the bigger one): When you load a checkpoint the dead bodies are gone. So loot them before. Also: Don't load your checkpoint after the "Bounty!" popup, the bounty target and area might be empty - so no bounty. Quite some times only one of the bountys can be found, and where the second should be it is just empty. Supposed to appear when doing the mission again after finishing it.
So in the end it should be 4 stars due to those two bugs, but that level and mission design makes it five star. The game is on par with Sniper Elite 4. And I did not have a single crash.
Gameplay is a loop of hunt, tag and kill. Enviroments are fun to roam around and kill soliders in, whole game gives off a MGS1 aesthetic in terms of location and design. The gore is pretty decent, not soldier of fortune tier, but blowing limbs and destroying heads will never get old. Over all a very overlooked game in my opinion. Well worth the asking price, even at full.
Disclaimer: I immediately went into the highest difficulty setting.
With the difficulty set to deadeye (highest) the game offers a simple sniper experience on nice large (enough) maps. It doesn't take you by the hand, just 5 big maps, a few objectives and approximate area's of where to complete them.
You are faced with plenty of enemy's that can easily surprise you at times, you have to be tactical and patient to find ways to kill everyone without raising any alarms (too soon), and you could die within a second if you make a bad choice. There are no manual saves so a mistake can cost you significant progress. The first two maps of this game (at this difficulty setting) can be relentless and they kept me on the edge of my seat.
That was my main experience te first two maps, but then things changed a bit, I got a little too familiar with the NPC a.i. and it became easy to abuse it, the added unlockable gimmicks are too effective and in the end it almost gets easy to wipe out whole bases of enemies, even at max difficulty setting.
I like the basis for this game, but would have preferred they stuck to the simple sneaking and tactics of the beginning of the game rather than becoming overpowered as is the case now.
Overall satisfied though, i finished the game and was sad it was over.
