Putting my money where my mouth is

More than a year ago I kindly asked Devolver Digital if they were going to bring Sludge Life to my store of choice, because I really didn't want to get it on EGS, even though it has been there for absolutely zilch for an entire year. I gave in and got it anyway, because... well... free is free, and the game looked right up my alley. I loved it from the get-go, spent months, on and off, just wandering the sludge planet, talking to its whacky inhabitants, getting pooped on by giant humanoid blue storks, throwing jars with human eyes at stuff, smoking Ciggy cigarettes, climbing buildings, finding stuff I had absolutely missed, previously. I didn't have to buy it, but I *did* ask for it to come to GOG, and here it is, finally, now including "selling out" jokes that were added for the current release, so I paid the 10 bucks so Terri Vellmann can go get himself a nice dose of virado à paulista on me. As for the game itself, let's get this straight out of the way: IT'S NOT FOR EVERYONE. Every single game in existence should come with this disclaimer right from the start. You know Baldur's Gate? Great game, not for everyone. Deus Ex? A cornerstone of video games, not for everyone. KotOR? Incredible but, again, not for everyone. These are three games I mentioned that I have the highest respect for, but I just can't get into, because they were clearly not meant for people like me. And that's OK. If you feel like you could enjoy Sludge Life, there's nothing wrong with you, you're no less of a gamer for it. Also, if you think you might enjoy it, chances are you probably will. It's an open world "vandal-sim" where you wander around, tagging stuff à lá Jet Set Radio, no clear goals at first glance (but there's an upgrade you can find in the game that keeps track of your goals, so... yeah), just the joy of finding a dog humping a bag of concrete or a cat with two buttholes -- including side by side poops in its litterbox. It's not an easy game to recommend, but I would, anyway.

Great if you're into this kind of games

Sludge Life is an exploration platformer with a silent protagonist who can earn the respect of the graffiti tag artists living in the Sludge (it's optional though, 2 of the 3 endings don't need you to do that). If that catches your imagination, you'll probably love the game a lot - if not so... I guess you'll find it boring and pointless. Worth to mention though - from a certain point of view - the game is both shallow and deep. Shallow, because the characters you meet have only a few lines - and that's their story. But the game is deep as well, because there are lots of crazy and fun ideas going on, and the more you explore the more you can connect the dots. While not much will react to your presence and actions in any meaningful way (except the other tag artists), the platforming is really well done and you can have lots of fun while exploring every inch of the environment (it's not that big though, but the verticality is amazing). What else can be said? Sludge Life is the kind of game you can easily finish in an afternoon (all 3 endings), but can re-play it from time to time, because visiting its world is a lot of fun. One last thought: just as a previous reviewer has already mentioned, the ingame To-Do List is broken - it doesn't work. Didn't hurt the experience for me, but it's a bit odd. Seems awkard being left in the game broken.

Surprised how much I enjoyed

After I tagged my first spot in the game I got lost in the world. I enjoyed it so much to have no real objective, besides explore and tag some spots. All the objectives didn't feel like I worked towards completing them, it just happened while I enjoyed the world and explored every corner of it. Only one negative for me, which is actually a pretty big one. The To Do List didn't work. None of the objectives got crossed of the list and didn't count the progress, except the smoking goal which freezed at 18/20. It didn't hurt my fun tho, thats why It is still 4 out of 5

What did I miss ?

I must have missed something. Everyone seems to enjoy that game. Why do I feel it's a very bad one ? You are threw into the game with no explanation. It looks great, I like the AD. It made me buy the game after all. I don't know much more. No music, too bad. Apparently you can tag. Ok. Let's tag things. One, two, three tags later, is it all ? Platform is clunky. I can't really jump where I want. Everything is non-sense. But the worst kind of non-sense : random non-sense. There is people telling me random thing. There is random objects on the floor. Cyclope cop ( Cycope ? ) beats me. Buildings makes no sense. I can fart on command. There is a hovercraft on that roof. Someone in the dev team had a thing with anus. No kink-shame, just surprised. The more I play, the more I feel like they threw random bullshit ideas on a paperboard and made it a game. I keep tagging, for some reason I'm still there. I found a glider. I reach the highest point of the very tiny map, that I've already explored. I die of the fall. Decide it's enough. I must have missed something.

Bug Life

This first-person Adventure has you exploring a beautiful wasteland; the skies have a lovely summer evening glow, but everything below you is black sludge. Your goal is to spray graffiti in certain spots to increase your rep, and eventually escape the city. You can also eat banana slugs you find all over the place, or fly for a short time after eating some 'shrooms. It is a little buggy, but still very playable. It's on the shorter side, but just the right length for this kind of borderline psychedelic adventure. If you're looking to just wander and vibe with just enough of an objective to keep you hooked, give this a shot.
