Description
You control the fate of Bathoryn, a doomed hero in a Gothic world, who seeks to liberate six cursed realms from six deadly overlords.

He must battle his way through this blighted land, packed with gruesome pixel art foes before ascending (or sometimes descending) into a stronghold, all the while defeating fiendish traps and vile monsters alike.

At the heart of every domain Bathoryn will confront a mighty foe - defeat it and his quest continues to its ultimate destiny. Fail, and you’ll die gruesomely – mauled by werewolves, disintegrated by floating monstrosities, squashed by great weights or torn apart by hidden blades. And you will fail…

There are 3 key areas to be mastered in order to vanquish Slain: Back from Hell.

- Learn to wield 3 deadly elemental weapons, each one exploiting weaknesses in different enemy types. Each has a different combo, timing and use. Mastering quick switching between weapons is the path to victory!
- Glean the placement and timings of enemies and booby traps.
- Generate, conserve and unleash your Mana wisely.

Accompanied by the heavy metal visuals is an even heavier metal soundtrack recorded by Curt Victor Bryant (formally of Celtic Frost).
  • Challenging ‘elemental’- based melee and magical combat
  • 6 hours of bone-crushing, metal-fueled mayhem & gore
  • Choose from 3 unique weapons in your fight against the demon hordes.
  • Full soundtrack recorded by Curt Victor Bryant formally of Celtic Frost. \m/
  • Cunningly concealed secrets (shhh).
  • Boss fights, mini-boss fights, sub-mini- boss fights & macro-sub- mini-boss fights.
  • No laborious levelling, no tedious grinding, no wimpy crafting!

compatibility issue

Play a little but the game seems broken (on win7 64 for me) : it freezes after each death. It works on win 10 on a friend computer. Many users have the same issue since 3 years. The game devs move on another game and don't support anymore this one. GOG should aware the customers. What a pity, the game seems enjoyful

Game is shit, don't buy it

Controls are crap, complete with delay and odd timings. Graphics aren't great. Music is awful. Game should've stayed dead.

Menu system is bonked. Gameplay is fun.

Very simple and fun gameplay much like a SNES or Genesis title. Great pixel art graphics with modern atmospheric special effects. The controls in the game are working great for me. When you swing your sword it is a slower attack, but it does a decap on your enemies which recharges your mana or you can swing overhead for a quick attack, but then you get no mana recharge. You also have some spell attacks like a soul bomb which wipes the screen of enemies. I also ran into a spell that shot out ghoulie heads, but for some reason I have not been able to figure out how I got that spell. The menu system is super buggy and is why I knocked off a star as I would have rated this four stars otherwise. As of initial release here are the problems I have run into with the menu system: 1.) Choosing Credits locks up the game where you have to force quit the app on both Mac and PC. 2.) Sometimes when lowering the music in game cuts the music out completely although rare. 3.) No quit to desktop option at the title menu. So I have to force quit the game. 4.) Input menu option does nothing. 5.) Display option is info only. (designed that way maybe?) I have heard GOG got an early version build of this game by mistake so it may improve greatly soon. Let's hope so because this game has awesome potential.

Great game and music

Great game and music. I always loved series of classic games of Castlevania. But this is many times better. Great that the game supports Linux. It would be great to access the game with superb soundtrack.

A Classic... Wannabe !

As Slain ! tries very hard to be a good game, I'm not happy to give him only two stars. But unfortunately, he deserves such a treatment, due to his countless imperfections. I was very enthusiastic to put my hands on such a good-looking old-school platformer, the trailer was cool, the music seemed to rock... What a disappointment. If, like me before I tried it, you want to buy this game, no matter the commentaries, let me warn you about the truth before Slain ! . 1/ The so-called "old-school" difficulty is really just the consequence of an excessive amount of the bad guys health points, broken hitboxes which aren't working well, sometimes too thin, sometimes too large, and a battle feedback which is ABSOLUTELY non-existent, I mean, it's just not there, and all this mixed up get you as frustrated as possible, just like what we all hate in the 90's games. The whole feeling of this game is spoilt. 2/ The pixel-art graphics is repetitive and not so cool past the first hour. At first you like what you see, like "woa such a cool dark-fantasy world dude", except that if you stay still for one second, you'll notice that's it's not pixel-art, but just a messy 2D graphical ensemble, lazily shaped and awfully designed. Pixels are just spilling all around the place, and eventually become a disgusting and unfinished amateur drawing. Awful. 3/ The music. I'm a metal-lover. But hearing the same musical loops over and over again of some very, very basical compositions, while having a bad day trying to get over the rest of this cataclysm... You want to have fun hearing metal, just launch Quake 2, Slain ! is not what you're looking for. 4/ The worst of it all beeing without a doubt an intolerable lag in the controls. Sometimes you can even push without a response. They just suck, no better word. Too bad, it could have been good. My two stars are for the idea. But it's not even close to passable. To sum up, do not buy it, it's simply a big failure, not worth your time or your money.
