SKALD: Against the Black Priory is inspired by roleplaying games of yesteryear, combining modern design and compelling storytelling with authentic 8-bit looks and charms.

Delve into a dark fantasy world, full of deadly creatures, tragic heroes, and lovecraftian horror for an epic retro-style adventure rich in exploration and tactical, turn-based combat.

Do you have what it takes to lead a company of broken heroes from the tainted shores of Idra to the gates of the Black Priory - and beyond?

Gather your party

Lead a band of broken heroes through challenging turn-based combat scenarios as you cleave, blast or stealth your way through deadly enemies of all definitions. Equip your heroes using a modern inventory system, fulfil objectives through quest logs, read journals to discover hidden secrets. And if the action is still a bit too hot to handle, auto-resolve to bypass conflict entirely.

Prepare thyself

Set yourself up for the journey ahead by crafting and cooking from a slew of distinct recipes Choose your character, select their stats and build out a party from a series of diverse allies, each with their own skill-set, agenda and personality. Decide between a dozen classes and varied backgrounds, levelling up to 20 while customising your spells and equipment to suit your style.

Venture Forth

Set in an unforgiving world with lovecraftian horrors and choice-based dialogue, your story will take many unexpected twists and turns. Living life as a mercenary, you’ll need to roll the dice to determine whether you fall prey to certain peril or escape grave danger.

Uncover the grand schemes of the Gallian Empire and explore the vast expanse of Freymark and the Outer Isles. Yet even these rough edges work in concert toward something singular and idiosyncratic. Indeed, the story becomes hard to pin down in the lead-up to a truly audacious ending, and the occasional abandonment of combat fortifies the horror undertones far more effectively than simply killing everything in your way. Skald may be easy to distill to its overt influences, but its best moments use those touchstones to build something new.

So far so good

I am early, but so far, I love the atmosphere, the characters and the gritty combat. I would love the details of opponents to be more clearly visible during combat, but I guess it was impossible with the graphic style and low resolution.

A fantastic RPG with lots of character

SKALD does a lot of things right: the story flows pleasantly, giving you opportunities to choose your own path. It understands perfectly how the cosmic horror genre works, and slowly makes you feel entangled in a darker and darker spiral. The gameplay is smooth and pleasant. Obstacles you'll find have several ways of being overcome, exploration is genuinely rewarding and the combat system has strategic depth while still moving along quickly, and not bogging you down. One thing that I really appreciate is that the ruleset is custom, has enough depth to it but isn't overly complicated. Additionally, the way you develop your characer has a meaningful impact. Abilities and bonuses are significant, not just small increments here and there.

an instant classic!!!

Feels like the old rpgs and even has mutliple crt filters to give that real old school feel. The story is engrossing and will be playing this for quite a long time.

Solid writing and action

Brisk turn-based action and strong writing with a epic throughline of cosmic horror. One of the best CRPGs I've played in a long time.
