SimCity™ 4 Deluxe Edition

Occasionally, people voice the opinion that SC2k or SC3k are better games, and I can understand how one might think so. SC4 didn't initially grip me in the same way as its predecessors did, and it does feel a little unwieldy at the start. However, once you spend sufficient time with it, it will reward you with depth and possibilities that other Sim City games (and other city building games in general) just don't have. Once you have a few cities under your belt, go to sc4devotion.com or simtropolis.com to find all manner of great add-on buildings. However, there's one point of criticism here - while the modding community produces awesome content, there is a pervasive petty possessiveness that prevents people from producing easy to download and install mod packs. So, while things like CAM are great ideas and offer rewarding gameplay, in reality I expect few people will want to go to the trouble of spending a few weeks to set it up.

BUYER BEWARE! First let me say i LOVE this game and as a game, itself, it is SUPERB all by itself. BUY THIS GAME if you have an older PC or if you run Virtual Box / VMware and love to play old stuff without risk of bugs or system instability. HOWEVER, IF YOU DO NOT run such a setup, then listen closely: This game works GREAT on OLDER versions of Windows. And Compatibility Mode DID NOT WORK for me (for long) in Windows 7 or 10. The game WILL RUN under Windows 7 (vista, 8, 10... were not tested), but it will ONLY run for a little while, and then, suddenly, your game will CTD (Crash to Desktop) out of the blue and seemingly at random. MY ADVICE to ANYONE who gets this game, is to search for a solution to PREVENT that from happening. ONE of the issues this game might have is Processor Affinity (the game was made before the era when dual-core or many-core CPUs were so prevalent, so i think it tends to run on only 1 core. IF you adjust the properties of the RUNNING executable WHILE IN GAME, with a program like Process Explorer, and set the Affinity to ALL of your cores instead of just 1, THAT MIGHT fix the problems you may encounter in Windows 7 or higher. I say "MIGHT" because i STILL had CTD's when / after having done this.) WHAT TRULY needs to be done to this game, is to have someone (a fan modder or someone at or from the old EA / Maxis team) look at the executable and see if they can fix the bug that DOES CAUSE this game to CTD at random under Windows 7. I am fairly sure that if that same problem happens under 7, then it should also happen under 8 and 10 too. But YMMV (Your Mileage May Vary).

Back in 2000-something, my aunt bought me Sim City 4 on CD for my birthday (I think, I still have it somewhere actually). My childhood friend and I would spend hours building cities and destroying them, would get run out of office for causing economic collapse, and would manage our sims' lives, ignoring their complaints that a school was too far from their home. It was great fun! Sadly, once I got a better computer, the game, for whatever reason, started running too fast to be playable. I really don't know why (especially given how some of the other reviews on here state the opposite even on modern-day computers), but since computers stopped having a 'turbo' button, and since I wasn't as internet-resourceful as I am today, the CD ended up gathering dust somewhere around the house. Regardless, this is not an issue anymore (if ever, I don't know), so if you want a good city-building game by Maxis and EA (before the former died and the latter killed it), buy this game. The full price is a bit steep for an almost twenty-year-old game, I think, but the game itself is great.
